COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Oktoberfest beer as we know it has been a part of classic Bavarian lager repertoire for over 150 years, although the celebration itself dates back to 1816. The familiar rich amber lager we now know by this name originated in Vienna and migrated to Bavaria by the 1850s. Like the classics, our version is deeply malty, with just enough hops to provide a sense of balance. But our version lightens up the body a little to avoid being too sweet, making for a crisper drinking experience. We start with the classic Vienna and Munich malts, and use a few other types as well, for greater complexity as well as an easy drinkability. Slightly more hop bitterness as well as some pleasing hop aroma gives the Berghoff Oktoberfest a bit more punch and personality than the original.

Draft at the Berghoff. Clean amber color with a light stream of bubbles feeding a half-finger head. Malty smell that comes through in the taste, but it also carries an impression of salt. I had the same with the DortWunder the day before, and it may be simply the same water profile, which involves some calcium and sodium. So maybe Randy Mosher was going for a "house" lager style. But the malt is fuller to make up for it, and the hops are lighter as befits the style. I will have to try to dunkel to see if they do share some traits.

Keg@O'Hare airport. Deep straw, thin head. Off-dry, medium body and bitterness, balanced CO2. Malty, buttery taste, faintly sour. Caramel, faint hops, burnt popcorn, diacetyl. Bad keg lines, or traces of an infection? (2014-09-29) ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle poured into a shaker. Pours a light copper with a half finger of white head. Aroma of caramel and grains. Taste is similar. Lightly bitter with some herbal hops and light metallic notes. Medium bodied with a somewhat thin texture. Fizzy carbonation and a surprisingly long finish. Pretty good. Much better than I was expecting.

Bottle. Mostly clear golden yellow pour with a small spotty white head. Grains and light malt, but way too much metal character.

Pour from a 12 oz bottle. Light amber brew with small quickly fading head that soon fades. Aroma of light malt, cereal, some metal. Taste is mildly malty with a nice crisp finish - tart fruit and some bitter grass / hay. Thin palate. Enjoyable!

10/13/13 Trade from Jamil. Weak scent of tart apples and grain. Pretty copper pour with a decent head. Lighter crisp feel. Nice tart bright flavor to a sweet malty cracker and grain quality. A solid Oktoberfest. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

From a bottle poured in a novelty pilsner glass my sister in law bought me. Very nice sweet malty fruity aroma. Flavor is sweet grainy malt and a crisp finish. A very spot on, if not a little bit boring, execution of the Marzen style. Well balanced.
