2.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 linkolnlogg (94) - your home, Minnesota, USA - AUG 17, 2006
Bottle to pounder (shaker). Pours out a light corn gold with a playful light bubbly head. Scent is mildly hoppy intermixed with a strong yeast character. Taste is a mild but pleasant hoppiness that persists into the finish. Not too much variety/ complexity but a nice stable pale ale from start to finish.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 jimvy (131) - O’Fallon, Missouri, USA - JUL 20, 2006
Bottle. Pours a hazy copper with a white head that thins quickly and then leaves altogether. Aroma was initially some light citrus and earth notes, with some malt as well, but it quickly disappeared. Flavor has a decent balance between hops and malt, but the hops are a bit light on flavor. Bitterness is evident and last into the finish. There is a bit of the grapefruit tartness in the finish as well, though I don’t get a lot of citrus in the flavor otherwise. Body is medium-light. Overall, a fairly easy drinking beer with a decent balance....but nothing to get excited about.
2.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Darkover (1440) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - JUL 8, 2006
Copper colored with a white head. Aroma of grainy malts, no hops. Flavor of sweet malts and a little hops.
3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 keoki182 (305) - West Bend, Wisconsin, USA - JUN 26, 2006
Berghoff beers are known in this area for being very inexpensive. Not cheap, but under $6/sixer. I grab a different pack everytime I’m low, and they haven’t disappointed me yet. The quality won’t blow anyone away, but it is definitely a step up from the beer most people are accustomed to drinking. I had it out of the bottle, so I can’t comment on the color. Smelled slightly hoppy, taste was same sharpness. Quite smooth and satisfying. Not exceptional but any means, but a great backyard beer on a hot summer afternoon.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20 Jabswitch (273) - Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA - MAY 25, 2006
Pleasant hoppy aroma that is expected with a pale. Light golden in appearance. Lively carbonation. Does not have the hoppy bitterness that I look for in a pale ale. Decent taste, small quickly disappearing head when poured from a bottle. Little aftertaste. This is not a sipping ale but rather a thirst quenching ale.
3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 jpm30 (1587) - East Central, Georgia, USA - MAY 1, 2006
From a 12oz. twisted cap long neck brown bottle with no freshness date. Made a decent appearance, poured a clear amber hued golden with a foamy white head that settled into a thin, semi-sticky lacing, good carbonation. Had a citric and floral nose with a little sweet fruitiness. A crisp smooth medium bodied mouth feel, above average drinkability. Grainy and subtle caramel malty taste that is quickly followed by a spicy citric hoppiness, sharp, then rolling on the tongue, a sweet fruitiness towards the end and a dry grainy and mildly bitter finish.
One of the better beers from Berghoff/Huber, affordable and quaffable, often on sale in my area.
2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 hopdog (6943) - Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 4, 2006
UPDATED: APR 5, 2006 12oz bottle acquired in trade with JCapriotti (thanks!). Poured a medium and clear amber color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of citrus, caramel and lemon pledge. Bland tastes of citrus and bready. Nothing really stands out about this except the lemon pledge aroma.
2.1 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 Zeswaft (1144) - Seattle, Washington, USA - MAR 30, 2006
My god, never have I tasted something so undeserving of the title pale ale. This is just awful. I don’t think there are any hops in here. The aroma is sweet caramel and weird like strawberry or something. Flavor is exactly the same. Just blahhh malt and no hops. Honestly I didn’t expect anything more. Thank god my 500th rating is close so I can drink a Mephistophiles. again, this beer sucks bad. No wonder why the Berghoff children don’t want to run the company any more. Their beers suck dick. At least at 5.8% it’s above average for alcohol
