3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 CaptainCougar (6834) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - MAY 3, 2008
Bottle shared by ATLBeerDog: Pours an oily opaque with dark brown edges and a thin, spotty-lacing light tan head. Aroma of oaky bourbon and some sweet caramel and dark chocolate. Starts fairly full with good malty sweetness and lots of woody bourbon before a slightly drier warming finish. Seems like it could use a little mellowing and should be real good in another year or two, but is still pretty tasty now.

Pours black with a quickly receding tan head. Smells of strong bourbon and roasted malt. Very light lacing. Heavy bourbon tastes that is lightly carbonated, with a malty bitterness aftertaste.
This is a sipper, what a lovely sipper it is! I would love to see this one commercially available.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 brewandbbq (269) - Manchester, New Hampshire, USA - JAN 21, 2008
Pours dark, opaque brown, with barely translucent mahogany edgework.
A tan head rose to an inch-plus, and fell slowly to barely cover the surface. Fairly decent lacework with some errant threads of foam.
Aromatics have bourbon leaping out of the glass. Dark chocolate, roast coffee, and vanilla follow through.
The nose finishes with a hint of oaky tannins.
The mouthfeel is medium and thinnish for an Imperial stout.
The pallet has a well balanced mix of dry chocolate, caramel, and coffee beans as a base. The bourbon is larger than expected by the nose, and the character of the base beer gets a bit lost under it.
The beer is very smooth and quite warming, with plenty of boozy alcohol, but not hot.
Bitterness is minimal and it finishes fairly quick except for the bourbon, which continues to warm with successive breaths.
Very tasty, but aside from the bourbon barrel component, the rest of the beer is a bit timid
