Thanks to jjpm for sending this in a recent trade. I’m trying to narrow down my collection of imperial stouts starting with those less likely to hold up well over time. That means the Expedition Stout and Old Rasputins get a break while I sample others from around the country. This wasn’t bad though as far as imperial stouts go it was pretty average. It’s still an excellent beer and well worth trying if you run across it in your travels.
Aroma / Appearance - The carbonated black body did not yield much of a head despite a fairly aggressive pour. It did however yield coffee, anise, plum, raspberry and chocolate brownie notes. While not the richest imperial stout it does have all the core ingredients.
Flavor / Palate - Raspberry, coffee and plum hit the throat first before the second wave of raisins asserts itself. For the style it is fairly light on the palate; it was not hard to finish off the bottle. If such a thing as a sessionable imperial stout existed this might fall into that category.
railcat1 (482), Hammond, Indiana, USA Jun 22, 2008 This was a sweet and dark black pour with a small tan head and a hint of coffee and very creamy but kinda thin for a IPS but overall this was a good beer.CHEERS! ATLBeerDog (137), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jun 18, 2008 Pours pitch black with a beautiful caramel/tan 1/8 inch head. Heavy, heavy sweet sticky lacing clings tightly. Smell is surprisingly faint. Smells of bourbon, roasted malts, coffee, and chocolate. First taste is very creamy with the bourbon flavor leading the way with deep rich malts, coffee and chocolate mixing together. A nice strong bitterness follows….again very creamy. Not as big a body as DL, KTG, or Abyss, but still a very nice backbone. This is very good! Rciesla (712), Brick City, New Jersey, USA May 26, 2008 Bottle. Pours a dark brown beer and a thinner tan head. The flavors are of chocolate, toffee, roasted malts, and caramel. The beer is sweet creamy but overall seems bit watered down, maybe some more etoh would one up this one. pint_size (1001), Austin, Texas, USA May 16, 2008 4-30-08 bottle shared with lb4lb thanks to jjpm74 and rbuckstar!!
Black pour with good ivory beige head. Sweet toffee malt smell. Flavor was sweet and slightly drying. Mouthfeel was nice - a smooth and yet light body. Overall, quite drinkable. lb4lb (1281), Austin, Texas, USA May 1, 2008 Bottles courtesy of jjpm74 and rbuckstar. Thanks guys!
Pours black with a medium sized, short lived head. Smell is very roasty at first, but it seemed to fade on me as it sat out for a few minutes. Flavor was bittersweet milk, roastiness, with a touch of stale cardboardiness to the malt flavor. Medium bodied. Not bad, but not my favorite, either.
