Skred (107), Houma, Louisiana, USA Jan 1, 2003 Solid pale ale with no obvious defects. From opening the bottle to finishing the glass, reminds me of the (apparently defunct) St. Andrew’s Friar’s Ale from Dallas. Dull copper color, decent but short lasting head, very good balance between hops and malt in both aroma and flavor, good body, clean finish. Not a Top Ten candidate, but substantially above average. ClarkVV (3559), Allston, Massachusetts, USA Jun 1, 2007 Bottle consumed on 5/10/07
I bought this bottle in Maine of all places, probably 2 years ago and have kept in the fridge ever since, trying to figure out what it was. In fact, this version wasn’t even brewed at Joseph Huber, mine lists Rochester, NY and thus is a High Falls creation.
Expecting to dump it after pouring, I was shocked when a very large and well-retained beige head rose up in the glass, atop a dark amber-auburn body with deeper mahogany tints. Clear and filtered, but amazing that it still has such a head.
Estery nose, with ripe fruits scattered about caramel, nicely rich pale malts and a dry, crusty, earthy note from some other medium malts. Absolutely flawless, with no oxidation!?!?
It was even more surprising to find a deliciously malty flavor with honey, vanilla, caramel and some woody/earthen malts all being balanced by a perfect amount of hop bitterness on the finish. Perfect attenuation and a very nice level of carbonation, resulting in a nearly-creamy texture. Extremely drinkable. Wow, go figure. Oakes (7047), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Jan 7, 2002 Dark amber, very thick malt and earthy hops, rich toffeeish character, rooty hop dryness. Definitely has a ’pre-prohibition’ taste. tbarnette (105), Allen Park, Michigan, USA Oct 29, 2005 Darned good ale... I bought a very disappointing microbrew pack, and this was the shining star. Has an aftertaste a little off, but this is still a great ale! HarmonKill-a-Brew (300), Wilmar, Arkansas, USA Jan 6, 2006 Dark bronze in color. Flavor was a well balanced blend of malts and hops with a slight hint of yeast. Listed as an amber ale, but tasted more like an english pale or even a watered down APA to me. Good beer.
