duff (5407), Sydney, Australia, Surrey, England Sep 28, 2002 Very North German, very pilsnerish, except for the dark malts, dry bitter, slightly resiny, i dig it a lot, flavourful, quaffable, and palate covering. motelpogo (4360), Plzen, Czech Republic Oct 22, 2001 good stuff. much better than their pils. surprisingly thick for a schwarzbier. i agree with excematic that stylistically it more closely resembles czech dark beer. the flavour actually goes somewhere which is often not the case with schwarzbier Poperinge (353), Cowtown, Alberta, Canada Jan 5, 2007 Updated: Jan 7, 2007Had this on tap on the Bus Station bar’s patio in Berlin. Enjoyable and why are there only 35 ratings? I have to agree with Oakes "those who like the style screech this beer out. Page 48 of MJ’s Great Beer Guide only 473 Classic Beers to go. Poured, chilled from the fridge, into a stein glass. Deep, deep ruby brown body that shimmered and sparkled in the lights. Head grew off the pour to sit an inch and a half thick, rocky, tan in colour and dense, holding well for the length with good lacing. Can’t say it isn’t an attractive number. Aroma was dry and reminiscent of moist, charred wood and a bonfire been spoilt by the rain. Its smoky but dense and has just an inkling of bitter, zesty fruit and burnt rubber shining through from the depths. Very pleasant waft that didn’t quite match the palate. Inside it is quite rich, sweet and almost sticky giving it a highly viscous mouthfeel. Malts are complex, very woody, tannic, slightly berry fruity with some bitter, roasted coffee beans, aniseed and ofcourse then there is the black patent style smoky edge. It is zesty in back, gently astringent on the swallow with just a little bitter malt and stripped pine. Aftertaste is all smoke and fruit sugars, and it is long. An odd taste of baked mushroom developed late into drinking, I had myself question that but it was there. I took a shine to this. It is sticky yet quite light and controlled, wonderfully balanced and generally pleasing to drink. A nice Schwarzbier.
