UPDATED: OCT 4, 2009 Bottle@Home, Oct 09, 3.2: Toffee and German hops aroma. Dark brown colour, light brown head, fair lace. Sweet, bitter, toffee, herbs, light malty. Bit thin. Flavourful but clean. Tap@6TageRennen, Feb 03, 3.2: Horseblanket mixed with chocolat aroma. Ruby color, light brown head, few lace. Mocca, roasted, light sweet. Dry finish. More like a porter or stout than the traditional German bocks which tend to be much sweeter and less roasted.

June 2011: 500ml brown bottle, obtained in Berlin and flown home to review at leasure. That review day has arrived: poured into my lovely Wolnzacher Brauhaus glass tankard, the beer having a best before date of Nov 2011, some 5 months away. Deep ground coffee colour (without milk), a tanned foaming head sat on top, half an inch initially, but thinning as the tasting progressed, but trying to stay the distance. The beer was well chilled, so no smells at first: I willed the beer to give off some esters I could talk about: to be truthful it didn’t give up a great deal, some chocolate and coffee I suppose. Mild dark chocolate and roasted Kenyan coffee flavours, with a slightly burnt toffee semi-sweetness in the aftertaste. The beer getting sweeter as it warmed. Mouth/body feel was fine, neither rich or creamy, but certainly not watery. The 7.0%ABv sitting nicely within the brew and hardly noticed, the carbonisation was just right, making it easy to drink and enjoyable. This isn’t a blow your socks off Bock, but it is well worth having if you can find it.

edpeg (497) - Berlin, GERMANY - FEB 28, 2012
Pours pitch black with medium mocha head, sets fast. Aromas are roasted malts, caramel and some raisins. Palate is slick little oily with medium mouth feel. Carbonation is soft and smooth. Taste is roasted malts, plums with dry aftertaste. Finish is sweet with warming sensation and vaguely bitter dryness. Overall very balanced dunkel bock, ABV well hidden, only the warmth. Good one.

Got tap version. Caramel and toffee staff. Coffee character. Not the great one, but I like this type of beer.

ClubGonzo (1966) - Bergen, NORWAY - DEC 11, 2011
Bottle from Galeria Kaufhof, Alexanderplatz, Berlin. Pours a deep, deep bronze body with a medium, short-lived off-white head. Nose is grainy malt notes and hints of sulfur and caramel. Not very nice. Taste is roasty caramel tones, grains and wort. Hints of yeast and sulfur. Fizzy carbonation. Not my idea of a good bock.

kuphish (351) - Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA - NOV 22, 2011
Bottle split with EC. Cola brown pour with ruby highlights. Diminishing, rocky tan head. Light coffee roast in the nose with some airy, sweet cola-like qualities. Touch of toffee. Some caramel in the flavor, with more toffee and a pinch of medium roasted coffee. Followed by faint raisin. Medium-light body with moderate carbonation. Nice malt profile is balanced with bittering hops. Dark fruit/raisin lingers in the finish. Fun beer!
