Bottle sample at a tasting at Beer Market Jaffa. Thanks eyes_wide_shut. Clear straw with a white head. Aroma of graininess, hay and light herbal and metallic notes. Sweetish flavor with malt, graininess, vegetal notes and some slightly herbal bitterness. Rather light-bodied.

from bottle, can and tap. a very kind a smooth taste. after one week in Berlin, this real ’Berliner drink’ just possessed me. this is the most common beer for Berliners, and it somehow recalled the taste of the first beers i ever had as a teenager. it’s really cheap if you get it in backshops or malls (less than 1 €), otherwise, the price runs up in bars.

Half litre on a tourist boat on the Spree in Berlin. Totally clear light yellow straw colour. Decent head. Very low bitterness in the taste, slightly sour. One of the least hoppy pilsners I’ve ever had. At least it looks nice in the glass! Passable.

Aroma: Little DMS with a hint of malts, no hops at all. Apperance: Clear, golden lager with no head. Taste: Watery with slight bitterness. Palate: Llight body with soft carbonation. That is Pilsener? No hops in aroma, just usual light lager.

This was ’my beer’ back in the days when West Berlin had a wall around it and Berliner Kindl still had a brewery: in fact I played football against the brewery team once. I try and re-visit the city every two years or so. I was surprised to see I’ve never written about this old friend of mine from the late 1980’s. I had a 0.3 litres poured for me in Dicke Vertin, Charlottenburg on 22nd Jan 2014 for old times sake. It’s changed a little if my memory serves me correctly: still bright, golden, clean and clear but missing the crisp dry hoppiness I remember. It never was a clever Pilsner, just pleasant and refreshing with a hop lead, it still is, but it seems more basic than ever, the malts appear more corn like in flavour and the finish was slightly metallic in nature. Glad I tried it again, it’s better than that awful Berliner Pilsner that has taken over half the city but not much better.
