Dark lager with a fine yeast culture is an unpasteurized beer brewed from four types of malt, with a distinctive full taste and a fine bitterness. Its special flavour makes it unique on the Czech beer market. From Bernard´s family brewery portfolio this beer is the most recognized in Czech and foreign degustation competitions.

Pours dark with a small head that quickly dissipates. Great aroma of roasted malt and coffee. Taste is a smooth, malty lager with hints of caramel, coffee and vanilla with a dry bitter finish. Really drinkable, excellent stuff.

500ml bottle. Pours an almost opaque black, with some ruby flashes. There is a large beige head, but it fades quickly, and does not leave any lace at all. The nose is interesting - earthy, with some caramel and the merest hint of cola. Spicy, peppery hops to start, moving into a mild milk chocolate flavour in the middle. The finish is lingering, but sadly not excellent, with the main detectable flavour being instant coffee. This is disappointing, I feel. I am a fan both of dunkel and of Bernard, but this is simply too weak. I can’t really understand why it is rated so highly.

500ml bottle. Small, fading creamy tan head, some lace & a dark, ruddy brown body. Roasted malt & coffee aromas. Overtones of coffee & roasted malt on the tongue underpinned by a crisp lager malt sweetness & dryish hop. Light to medium body, medium carbonation with a roasty bitter finish.

Draught. Creamy off-white good mostly lasting head. Almost black colour. Moderate malty and light hoppy aroma. Moderate bitter flavor. Some caramellic notes. Average moderate bitter finish. Oily palate. Nice dunkel.
