Strong black lager. It’s a special dark lager produced from five types of malt with a striking full flavour and light bitterness. Its special flavour makes it unique on the Czech beer market.

On tap at Uncle Paya. Can’t remember anything much about this beer except that it was a fairly acceptable substitute for the half-half I unsuccessfully tried to order with my poor Czech.

Nose of roasted malts and burnt caramel. A solid dark brown hue with an active but short-lived tan head and no lacing. The palate is roasted malts, burnt caramel, and cola, with hints of citrus and mild bitterness. Medium-light body and medium carbonation. Overall, a roast beer for the Czech beer culture of Pilsner styled brews.

Bernard Černý Ležák 12° (CZ) - Tmavý - 5.1%

50 cl swing top bottle. Dark red to mahogany color, almost black, clear. Big airy beige head. Nose is quiet, somehow smokey. Taste is burnt malts, toasted malts, charcoal. Some fruity overtones of dark grapes, plum, wort. Woody. Taste is well balanced, soft bitterness in the finish, a bit tart. Duty texture, medium bodied, carbonated. Alcohol noticeable in the finish with dry fuel notes. Solid tmavy, balanced, they tend to be ultrasweet at times.

500ml bottle [as Bernard Černý Ležák 12°. Debt of gratitude is due to Gunnar.]. Darkest brown colour with a red glimmer, huge, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, beige to tan head. Minimally grainy, dark malty aroma with grassy hoppy overtones if not a metallic touch, a cautious touch of chocolate and coffee. Taste is dark malty, slightly grainy, chocolately, a touch of coffee, slightly diluted dark malty sweetness. Round and balanced, sadly minimally anaemic.
