3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 beerinmarch (2830) - USA - JAN 23, 2005
Out of the bottle this winter brew pours a dark cherry red with a big bubbled light tan head that leaves some minor lacing behind. Very earthy toasty aroma with sweet caramel, some dough notes, and some dried out hops. Taste starts with cocoa up front, followed with some warm caramel malts, toasty with a medium sweetness. Finish is mildly bitter, very well balanced, a slight metallic taste. Medium body with a smooth dry finish.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 RSRIZZO (1679) - Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA - DEC 2, 2007
Had this beer on 2/17/1999. Color is a deep dark brown with good carbonation and a light head. Aroma is a dark roasted malt scent. Taste is rich and strong. It starts with a medium body that is full of a rich roasted malt taste that goes down with a slight sharpness and the roasted flavor gets a bit stronger. The finish caries the malt flavor backed with a light bitterness and light hop flavor. It makes for a good winter brew but is not as good as most Bert Grant Ales.

There is a malty aroma and the color is amber with shades of copperish red. The head is a nice long lasting tan. Deep Powder begins with a slight malty sweetness and builds to a roasted bitterness. The body is medium and the aftertaste has a pleasent bitterness that lasts.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 kramer (3454) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 19, 2006
12 oz bottle. Pours a clear dark ruby colored body under a very small fizzy off-white head that immediately vanished. Aroma is heavily malty with a little sherry like oxidation creeping in. Lighter notes of alcohol, soy, and chocolate. Flavor is fairly dry with some cardboard like oxidation quite apparent. Some chocolate, toasted malts, and some light bitterness make it’s way past the age. Mouthfeel is fairly thin with fizzy prickly carbonation. Slightly sticky on the finish. Overall, this has gone down the other side of the hill I believe. Still drinkable, and actually quite interesting if you’re a fan of aged beers, but I wouldn’t let it go any longer.

UPDATED: JUN 28, 2006 I was surprised at the low ratings on this one. Lots of coffee, chocolate, toffee and toasty malt. Silky smooth with a light sweetness on the tongue. Sort of chocolate milk like, and really tasty.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 MAP (1133) - Lakewood, Ohio, USA - MAR 1, 2006
Aroma shows some oxidation, but a good strong caramel malty smell, I detect a hint of chocolate in there as well. The flavor sure has died down some I assume. It lacks a real punch but still maintains some clean amber roasty flavors. Palate, indeed has smoothed over and killed the hop profile. Not impressive, but still pretty decent given its age.
