Commercial Description:
Bert Grant's Perfect Porter, a style of chocolate-brown ale, rose to fame during the 1700's as a favorite refreshment of Industrial Revolution laborers including many working porters after whom it was named. Grant's Perfect Porter is full-bodied and brewed with imported Scottish peated malt that enhances its delicious chocolate character with a pleasant, lightly smoky flavor.

Thin beige and creamy head with black body. Chocolate and malt aroma. Tastes of dark chocolate and malt-definitely dominated by cocoa. Finish is dry and nicely hopped. Maybe a little thin, but nothing else to complain about. Very nice porter.

Bottled. Poured clear, medium-deep garnety brown with a short, well-formed cap of tan head. The aroma picked up sweeter (and somewhat degraded) caramel and chocolate notes with faint smoke and herbal accents. The flavor held up remarkably well with roasted semi-sweet chocolate initially, followed by a full dose of coffee and smoked woody notes.. tasty, complex, and intriguing, which is impressive considering the low gravity and age. A tad shy of medium-bodied on the palate and very, very dry.. grainy smoked wood sticks to the edges and there was a nice moderate level of roast throughout. This was a lovely beer that I wish was still available.

I had this beer during the summer of 2001 while on vacation in St. George, Florida. I was drinking a lot of Rolling Rock and Guinness at the time. When I had this, it was the most perfect drink I had ever consumed - rich body with the definite aroma of chocolate and coffee. Where, oh where did my Perfect Porter go?

Had this beer on 6/14/1999. Color is a deep black with good carbonation and a nice head. Aroma is rich with the scent of darkly roasted malt. Taste is deeply roasted and lightly bitter. It starts off with a rich medium body that goes down with a robust roasted flavor. The finish is a deeply roasted malt flavor backed with a good strong bitterness. Overall it’s a very good, well rounded and richly roasted Porter.
