Born to create a fine lager: When your name is Berthold ’Beer’ Keller, it seems inevitable that you become a master brewer. Berthold was born in Bavaria and brought up in Belgium. He has a truly continental approach to brewing. Fusing styles he created this premium crisp, smooth lager with a rounded continental finish.

500ml can, bright honey gold golor, with a bubblely white head, and leaving some belgian laces, clean mild toasted, pale, pilsner malt nose, with a soft hay accent, and light grainy cereal note and a hint of mineral water in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a crisp honeyed biscuity, pilsner, pale malt character with a hint of flowery hop grassiness, a bit watery, leading towards a honeyish pale malt, lingering hop leafy bitterness finish.

Meh. Poors straw yellow, short lived white head. Aroma is grassy and grainy, flavour is grassy and grainy. About as average as average gets.

Can. Bland hop aroma. Mild sweetness and bitterness. Overall dullness. Some seemingly German pilsner influences, but kind of odd how subdued the hops were.

500ml Can: I bought it because the can is extremely attractive in a matte baby blue with a single red K. I once had great luck buying a matte blue CD by Kelly Joe Phelps and hoped this good luck would continue a decade later. Pours yellow, carbonation so thick I thought it was raining upside down inside my glass. The white head is nice, albeit thin. Ah crap, I’m getting bad vibes.. the aroma is like tin can apple juice. Surely this isn’t what Berthold meant by "fusing styles". And so I sip. Extremely mild, tastes like sweet rice, slightly metallic, straw. Smooth enough despite the upside down rain, but this is just another in the seemingly endless line of lame pale lagers thrust upon Canada. There’s a picture on the side of the can of a little man throwing something in the garbage. It was my fault for not heeding the warning.

(Rating #2879)

Nice can. Otherwise a wholly unremarkable lager. Pale, almost scent free with a taste that was closer to mineral water than a well made beer. But, a clean aftertaste which, I guess, puts it way ahead of all the macro lagers that leave a chemical tang on the tongue. Only way I’d buy again is if I have to decorate a room in light blue.

Nose is corn and rice, with a bit of malt, clear yellow, tiny, short lived white head. Taste is corn and malt. Light bodied, balanced, bitter. Fair.

Golden yellow with puffy off white head. Grassy metalic aroma almost like a wet bar towel. Flavour is grassy and very metalic, bready and is very lacking overall. Poor body.

2009-01-11. Crisp yellow body with a nice white head that fades. Aroma has a strong industrial grainy malt character, and smells like adjuncts even though I suspect it is all malt. Light floral oddness. Flavour is less odd, mild pale malts are muted, grainy straw character, light bitterness. More bland than offensive, which is the reverse of what I expected. Still, not particularly appealing. Brief pale malt sweetness sneaks through in the finish. Average to light bodied palate. Meh. Bottle from the LCBO, Toronto

Can from the LCBO. So it’s a beer created by a Bavarian, contract brewed in Belgium for a UK company, and exported to Canada. Well, hooray for globalization! Too bad the beer isn’t great, though. Pours a nice honey-golden with a persistent white head and very active carbonation. Aroma is grainy with some slight cardboard notes and an oddly artificial hop character - ah, I see "hop extract" on the ingredients list, perhaps that’s the culprit. Body is suitably crisp when it’s cold, gets a bit sticky as it warms. Flavour is better than I expected from the aroma - simple, but pleasant and balanced in that inoffensive canned Euro-lager kind of way. OK, it’s not awful, but I can think of at least a half-dozen easily available "premium" lagers that I’d choose before it,
