shintriad (698), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jul 27, 2008 This is pretty much a "beer about nothing." For something with a style as bold as Eisbock, it kind of seemed like a regular, somewhat dark, somewhat malty brown beer. Nothing offensive but nothing distinctive either. Forgettable.
MrManning (1458), London, Ontario, Canada Oct 1, 2008 Bottle- Deep and transparent mahogany liquid sits under a small and short lived thin off white head. Some lace. Nose is sugary (brown sugar, demererra) some nutty notes with a bit of dark fruits and metallic nuances. Tastes of sweet nutty caramel malts, brown sugar, and again, dark fruit. The slightly higher than normal alcohol doesn’t really show up. Finishes sweet with only a small serving of hops, quite astringent. Ok. Appearance: dark amber brown feel , light mid creamy head.
Nose: Medium light aroma. Slight ripe fruit feel , plums and caramel.
Flavor/Palate : Medium full bodied. Slight feel of decent malt with sweet light brown character. Alcohol well blended. Light hops in shadow. Black tea like at finish.
HogTownHarry (3361), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Aug 28, 2008 Draught. At BeerBistro - 2008 Golden Tap Awards. Cloudy, light copper pour with a decent frothy head. Aroma of cranberry and light cedar, with a strong underlying sweet malt base, only mild spice. The taste didn’t quite live up though, sort of wan and dead - dry woodiness, weedy bitterness, weak sweet malt body. Average bodied, slightly dry and astringent, with a long, increasingly acidic finish, almost lactic by the end. Smells very nice, but sort of falls apart after that. KyotoLefty (306), Kyoto, Japan Aug 27, 2008 Very fruity beer, winey, with a bit of caramel, grapes, and dark fruits. Not too much alcohol. Well-balanced and fairly enjoyable. Great fruit. jerc (3268), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 24, 2008 2008-08-23. Very dark copper-brown body with a small beige head. (3+) Tangy toasty dry malt aroma, carries over to the flavour, more dry toasty malts, light alcohol and tangy note to the finish, dry tart caramel notes. Average palate. Okay but didn’t make me crave another. Bottle, Golden Tap Awards, Toronto, labeled "Nickel Brook Special Edition Spring Ice Bock"
