3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Reimer96 (594) - Alberta, CANADA - MAY 12, 2013
Thanks to cfrancis for this one. Pours a clear medium dark amber with a small frothy off white head. Aroma of spicy rye malts, piney hops, caramel and floral notes. Taste is spicy rye malt, caramel and some grassy hops. Overall this is done really well however the rye and hope blend leaves a bit of an astringent bitterness.

Pours a nice hazy copper colour with a small but full off white head leaving moderate lace. Aroma is a nice spicy rye, orange, pine and sweet caramel. Flavour is a zesty citrus, spicy rye, pine, and some low key caramel maltiness. Really tasty rye ipa!

Mini growler and bottle, from the brewery. Aroma of grain, strong hops, and strong sweet malt. Dark orange/brown, small white head. Taste - strong malt up front followed by intense hops. Like really strong hops here folks. Alcohol lingers and burns the ears while the sweet malt keeps giving a platform to these delicious piney hops. Well done on the balance here. As a recently transported Torontonian via Waterloo, this is easily the beer geek"s micro out of the bunch of new ones out here. You lot of Ottawa raters are a rather negative bunch it would seem. Lighten up and enjoy the the awesome variety of new micro brewers you have. I am really happy to now be part of this scene. Great job BTP.

Bottle from czar, thanks a lot for letting us sample this new brewery! Pours a clear golden with not much head... problematic? Carbonation is on the lower side, not sure how these were conditioned but there is some improvement needed on that point. Aroma is big malt with a good hops presence but they aren’t as upfront as they thought they would be. Taste has a strong bitterness, as one would expect, with a medium sweetness. Hops flavors are a lot subtler than expected, spicy rye taking up the rest of the space. Overall a nice one, not a great one.

Bomber from brewery shared with bro, cold, chalice. Deeply fruity, strawberries, good peppery notes, other sweet maltiness, a touch boozy, nice. Medium+ body with fairly sparse effervescence. Quite malty, fruity, berries, somewhat peppery, quite spicy, pine, slightly dusty, quite nice; dry with very good bitterness and a long, malty, fruity finish.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 cfrancis (1774) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 11, 2012
Pours a cloudy orange amber with a small white lacing. Not a lot of carbonation. Aroma is caramel, orange zest and loads of pine hops. Taste is very resinous, big pine and earthy hop flavours and bitterness. Well balanced with the caramel sweetness and the rye spice comes out in the aftertaste. Love that there is a DIPA in the Ottawa area on a regular basis. Will definitely drink again.

32 oz Growler at BTP.
4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 Hungarian_G (80) - - DEC 2, 2012
UPDATED: MAR 17, 2013 Pours a beautiful, hazy amber with a creamy, off-white 2-finger foam. Nice dense lacing and tiny bubbles. Up front aroma of fragrant pine, grapefruit, and sweet malted rye. Taste of strong citrusy hops and resinous piney bitterness balanced by a strong roasted malt backbone. The unique flavour of the rye adds variety and complexity that I haven’t had in other IPAs. Short, bitter finish and nice carbonation make for a very nice, very sessionable beer. The balance between the rye and the hops is outstanding with no hint at this brew’s heavy-hitting ~90 IBUs... and I didn’t notice the 9.1% ABV until I got up from dinner! Each sip begs another. I LOVE this beer... one of my new favourites. Unlike the previous rater, my 32oz mini-growler poured a nicely carbonated brew, so perhaps you had a slightly off bottle. Please don’t shy away from trying it again... I know I will keep going back for more!
