It had a nice, foamy head on top of its amber base. The aroma wasn’t as hop-forward as I was expecting. There were hints of pine and citrus along with a decent maltiness. It was crisp but slightly heavy. The high alcohol content wasn’t overpowering and it was smooth on the palate.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
My Bottom Line:
This rich Rye Wine-like creature develops plenty of caramelized cereal flavors to ground floral and citrusy hops in a slick, classy mouthfeel.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam tops the hazy pale amber.
-Alcohol is well hidden, but one can guess the potency of this beer easily through the mouthfeel (alcohol adding to it clearly).
-Hops and rye combine for a spicy touch in the finish.
-Sweetness levels are higher than expected. This is a sipper, no doubt.
-Execution is flawless. Beautiful malt structure throughout.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
A lovely orange/amber body topped by a moderate soft white head. Initial taste is rye with punchy grapefruit hops, orange rind, rich bready malt and a hint of pepper and sweetness. The hops become more astringent deeper into the taste. Mouth feel is rich and smooth. Powerhouse IIPA

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bomber, c/o JerCraigs - thanks!!! Pours somewhat cloudy deep orange-amber with fairly large and lasting bubbly/creamy beige head. Solid DIPA aroma with "rye" bite to it - resin/citrus bitterness, plenty of malt backbone - darned near a 9/10. Taste folows - it’s very like Cameron’s Rye PA but a bit boozier and definitely maltier - a solid no prisoners 8/10 here too. Chewy, fairly thick body, astringent, only mildly carbonated, a fairly long bitter finish, middling pithy palate coating tendencies, but overall massively drinkable for such a big beer. I will seek it out again.

Very nice beer. I’m actually becoming a fan of this whole rye-PA trend. Pours cloud orange with great head and lacing. Smells of citrus and pine, lots of grapefruit in hops. Finish is bitter. Booze well-disguised. Soft carbonation. Rye balances things out nicely. Medicine bottle from brewery.

Mini-growler shared with GregClow, mds, jerc & mabel -- c/o j&m.Pours a deep orange-amber with an average size semi-lasting frothy white head. Nice aroma of light rye grain, caramel malt and light citrusy hops. Flavour of rye grain, citrus hops, caramel malt and a huge bitter finish. Alcohol is well hidden. Medium bodied. My description makes it sound simple but it’s interesting and unique.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
2013-10-10. Hazy dark orange amber body with a nice off white head. 3+ Aroma is a bit of an odd melange to it. Green hops, mild rye grain character, citrusy hops. Hint of cooked onions? Flavour is pretty bitter throughout, pleasant citrusy hops woven through rye tinged grains, some resiny green hop notes as well. Average plus bodied palate, modest carbonation. Alcohol is present but surprisingly restrained. Decent but I much preferred the regular Rye Guy. Growler from the brewery.

I don’t usually go for the big cannon the first time I visit a brewery, but so I did when hitting Beyond the Pale last weekend after having faced a small board saying "No beer left" on my last attempt to visit. I was pleasantly impressed by this dark amber, spicy, resinous, sappy, highly grapefruity creation with a sense for balance. In mouth, the rye takes a lot of place, thickening the mouthfeel while balacing out the chewy crystals, making for a medium to almost thick mouthfeel whose engaging carbonation makes it seem smooth and easy going. Plenty of bitterness, but compensated by the rye’s spicy kick that reaches out again in the finish. An impression of balance concludes it all. Wow, that’s as good as I would expect the likes of Stone to pull out. Watch yourself Hop Rod Rye.
