3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
First have to say that of all the places that have opened up in Ottawa over the last few years this is the one that I was the most excited about and judging from the line-up when they opened today at noon (not too mention pretty much selling what they optimistically thought was a weekís worth of beer in 2 days) I am not alone. Now that being said I didnít necessarily think this would be the greatest beer ever but based on some interviews and discussions the brewers are passionate about beer and enjoy many of the same styles that us beer nerds do. Anyways...poured from a small growler (more places in Ontario need to do this). Dark amber with pretty much no head even with a swirl. A fair amount of caramel malt with a nice blend of resin and some citrus, bit of green apple and no hint of alcohol. Carbonation is very low so curious if maybe this suffered from being put into the growler, moderate body, initial bitterness that becomes astringent on the finish, dry, lots of resin and a very nice bitter taste at the every end. Like this, need to try it on tap or another growler to see if the carbonation appears as I think it would substantially improve things - that being said its worth trying for sure.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bomber, c/o JerCraigs - thanks!!! Pours somewhat cloudy deep orange-amber with fairly large and lasting bubbly/creamy beige head. Solid DIPA aroma with "rye" bite to it - resin/citrus bitterness, plenty of malt backbone - darned near a 9/10. Taste folows - itís very like Cameronís Rye PA but a bit boozier and definitely maltier - a solid no prisoners 8/10 here too. Chewy, fairly thick body, astringent, only mildly carbonated, a fairly long bitter finish, middling pithy palate coating tendencies, but overall massively drinkable for such a big beer. I will seek it out again.

Very nice beer. Iím actually becoming a fan of this whole rye-PA trend. Pours cloud orange with great head and lacing. Smells of citrus and pine, lots of grapefruit in hops. Finish is bitter. Booze well-disguised. Soft carbonation. Rye balances things out nicely. Medicine bottle from brewery.

Mini-growler shared with GregClow, mds, jerc & mabel -- c/o j&m.Pours a deep orange-amber with an average size semi-lasting frothy white head. Nice aroma of light rye grain, caramel malt and light citrusy hops. Flavour of rye grain, citrus hops, caramel malt and a huge bitter finish. Alcohol is well hidden. Medium bodied. My description makes it sound simple but itís interesting and unique.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
2013-10-10. Hazy dark orange amber body with a nice off white head. 3+ Aroma is a bit of an odd melange to it. Green hops, mild rye grain character, citrusy hops. Hint of cooked onions? Flavour is pretty bitter throughout, pleasant citrusy hops woven through rye tinged grains, some resiny green hop notes as well. Average plus bodied palate, modest carbonation. Alcohol is present but surprisingly restrained. Decent but I much preferred the regular Rye Guy. Growler from the brewery.

I donít usually go for the big cannon the first time I visit a brewery, but so I did when hitting Beyond the Pale last weekend after having faced a small board saying "No beer left" on my last attempt to visit. I was pleasantly impressed by this dark amber, spicy, resinous, sappy, highly grapefruity creation with a sense for balance. In mouth, the rye takes a lot of place, thickening the mouthfeel while balacing out the chewy crystals, making for a medium to almost thick mouthfeel whose engaging carbonation makes it seem smooth and easy going. Plenty of bitterness, but compensated by the ryeís spicy kick that reaches out again in the finish. An impression of balance concludes it all. Wow, thatís as good as I would expect the likes of Stone to pull out. Watch yourself Hop Rod Rye.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
[on tap at brewery opening]
Potent sweet citrus hops aroma in front of faint base malt. Hazy, ruddy amber under a white ring and dots. Orange peel flavour that develops into sweet malt with an assertive bitterness towards which the balance falls. Complex, with apricot and caramel accents. Medium to moderately bitter finish, light body, medium carbonation.

Really nice DIPA. Orange pour with a white head. Spicy rye notes play realty well with the pine resin floral hop character. Not boozy or hot, clean mouth feel and nicely bitter without being a palate wrecker. Good beer.
