Bottle from Bruisin Ales 2011 version - pours still murky ruby with no head. Aroma is sour cherries, vanilla, and funky. Taste is more sour ale then barley wine, but it doesn’t quite work as a sour ale either. There is this bitterness that comes through on the finish that becomes more pronounced as it warms. Weird.

November 2012. Bottle. Malty and fruity aromas. Pours red brown with a small head. Flavors of dark fruits, malt, alcohol and caramel.

Squat flip-top from Capone’s. Pours dark brown with minimal tan head. Nose is oaky cherry, run, some lactose and tannins. Tastes very tart, funky, with notes of cherry, lactic tartness, mild funk, and oak. This one is mis-categorized, and should be a sour ale.

Bottled (thanks bov). Deep hazy amber colour, small off-white head. Aroma is alcohol, tart wood, and some earth. Flavour is sweet malts, alcohol and some mild resiny notes.

Pours dark hazy copper color with no head. Aroma of fruits, dark berries and yeast. Flavor of dark berries, dark dried fruits and some toffee notes. Sourish juicy palate.

Aroma has oaky notes, sourish cherries and some vinegar. Flavour is sweet with oaky notes, vinegar, tart cherries and juicy notes. Too sweet, too oud bruin.

330 ml bottle @ WPBF 2013.
Pours a cloudy amber brown colour without a head. Aroma of caramel malts, sour berries and some hay. Flavour of sweet caramel malts, sour berries, bread, strong acidity and lemon juice. Medium bodied, slick mouthfeel and a slick, juicy, lemon finish. Decent.

Bottle. Pours a murky deep reddish brown, no head, and a couple spots of lace. Nose of caramel malt, oak, booze, raisin. Medium body, some tartness. Decent.

11.4 oz bottle. My 200th barleywine! Muddy brown with a few forced bubbles. Nose is caramel, rum, dried apricot and wood; slightly sour. Dull and watery with a faint tang. Taste is crab apple, a hint of caramel, sour grapes, black pepper and oak. Final rum note is all that keeps this interesting.

I thought this was pretty damn good. A very sour barleywine with good alcohol presence and little sweetness or over hop that pervades many newer barleywines these days. Extremely underrated here. Poured flat.
