Jokes (1449), Chicago, Illinois, USA Dec 11, 2006 Clear garnet with few, if any, bubbles. Essentially still. The aroma is just huge. Loads of vinous character: red wine, oak, cherries, spice, alcohol, light malt, red grapes and some sweet vanilla. The body is thick and silky as the lack of carbonation allows the liquid to encapsulate the tongue. The flavor is strong and shows more barrel-aged character. Mostly sweet with a hint of tannin bitterness and licorice-esque alcohol heat. The finish is long and warm, a good cold-weather beer. This isn’t a bad beer, but not quite as elegant as I’d hoped. The barrel-aging is cool, but probably a little too dominate and the strength just isn’t hidden at all. I like it, but a little refinement could make this really fantastic, at least in terms of my tastes.
ogglethorp (801), Ohio, USA Sep 9, 2008 Bottle shared by moejuck, I think. Pours a dark amber color with a thin beige colored head. Aroma is oak, alcohol, vineous. Flavor is blast of alcohol reminiscient of grappa, vineous, oak, spice. Palate is medium bodied, medium carbonation, finished super hot. Decent stuff if you can get past the alcohol, definitely gets in the way of enjoying this one. Not good. Vac (2253), San Diego, California, USA Jun 30, 2008 Bottle shared by SDbruboy, thanks Cliff. Pours with a cloudy red-brown body topped by a thin to medium thick head with a good amount of lacing. It’s slightly sweet and malty with an underlying sour note, a touch of fruit and some yeasty notes. Medium bodied and slightly dry. Huge thanks! Tart aroma, dark fruit, smells a bit like garbage. Lightly metallic. Nice fruity flavor, very mellow, vineous, with a light tartness, oak, and wine finish. Good drinkability. I wish I had a bottle of this of my own.
