3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 3fourths (6399) - Boulder, USA - JAN 1, 2011
caramel body, off white head. average retention. the nose certainly fits the bill for flemish red: apple cider vinegar acetobacter, solvent / metallic phenols, subtle oak. very light traces of alcohol in the nose, less early and more late. a lot of caramel syrup and strong brown sugar as well. hearty and sweet / salty mixed up front with the brine-like saltiness becoming amplified in the finish. solvent / taste of pennies is noticed mid-palate and increases with temperature. slightly warming finish when chilled, more boozy as it warms. the carbonation and acid are quenching and the mouthfeel is perhaps the highlight of this beer. it actually seems well-crafted and directed at a palate experienced with wine. overall it’s suprisingly enjoyable, even if this vintage is a touch too phenolic, giving it a dishsoap smell and flavor as it approaches room temp.

Bottle pour from Erzbierschof. Pours a very cloudy light brown. Smells mellowed, tart fruits, sour Brett, metallic overtones. Tastes medium sweetness, metallic oxidation, mellowed sourness with some soft apricot and other such fruits. Tingles the tongue. Very good, but might be fraying at the edges with age.

Pretty crazy beer. Not super sour, but lots going on. I got toffee, grass, a hint of some, lots of horse and blanket and lots of other nooks and crannies to explore. A little bit goes a long way with a beer like this, as palate fatigue soon sets in.
