4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Guerde (991) - St. Paul, Minnesota, USA - JUN 30, 2009
(bottle thanks Joebrew!) Pours dark amber with a towering beige head that completely fills my excessively large novelty snifter. The smell is really just enjoyable, with some scents of dust, light funk, stale hops, lightly floral, rosehips, and a faint touch of barnyard as well. The taste is great too, with flavors of caramel, vanilla, lightly floral, with some spices I can’t identify. The finish possesses a bit of yeastiness and a faint bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium and carbonation is lively. Don’t know why this is listed as an IPA, as it says it’s a Biere de Garde on the label, and it certainly tastes as such. Either way, this is a really enjoyable beer, and one I hope to try again. Thanks again Joe!
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 FoolishMortal (980) - San Diego, California, USA - MAR 21, 2007
Hazy dark orange with a towering off-white head. Applejuice, candied citrus, and floral spiciness in the aroma. Muted malt flavors up front, fruity and estery. Herbal spicy flavors then manifest, some floral tones. Earthen peppery character in the finish with some ruddy caramel. Mouthfeel is a medium light, somewhat dry.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 BigBeer45 (971) - Michigan, USA - FEB 25, 2007
Poured a brown red/burgundy with a tremendous off-white head, sweet, cider-sour and funky (yeast) fragrances, found some cinnamon in the nose, citrus and malt fragrances, malt taste with some spices, faint sour on the tongue, hints of wood and wine in the mouth, lots of carbonation on the palate makes this a light drink, dry finish, nice brew.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 RblWthACoz (963) - Brooklyn, New York, USA - FEB 3, 2008
Sampled 8-1-2007. I have actually had this beer several times prior to now. Somehow I never took the time to review it. I guess I was too busy enjoying it at Spuyten Duyvil to care about reviews.
Pours a dark brownish with orange tint and it is completely clouded. Nice crème head. Spices are on the nose as in an airy light orange citrus. Flavor is a thick mix of spices. That is the astounding theme here. Spices and a bit of funk. I feel like just biting into a thick bloody steak as I drink this. Feel has an attacking carbonation that is firm on the tongue. Liquid is pretty well bodied too. I say this is very drinkable, though the mass of spices assaulting the palate will definitely turn some people off. But hey, I like it. Enough to have had it a third time already.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 walleye (956) - Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA - JUN 5, 2006
wow what an honor I am the first American to rate this. from the bottle no date that I could find. poured a cloudy amber with a big bubbly light tan head. aroma the first thing that hits the nose is a light metallic followed by grapefruit, malts, amd yeast and fruits. flavor, orange, hazelnut, hoppy, sweet malts, with a bit of alcohol at the finish. this isn’t like any IPA I have had before good beer
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Hank1980 (942) - Athens, Georgia, USA - MAY 21, 2009
750 shared at tasting. Poured cloudy orange with a small beige head. Aroma of citrus fruits, sweet yeast, and light malt. Taste had plenty of orange flavors, light hop bitterness, mild yeast, and plenty of sweetness. Mouth was fairly carbonated and medium bodied. Finish was a little bitter. Overall, an interesting "IPA".
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 weeare138 (936) - Collegeville, Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 7, 2006
Thanks to Whaleman for this...
Appears an orange amber with a fluffy light tan head. Tons of scattered lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of a decent hop presence that is sweet, along with a malt presence that contains notes of herbs, citrus, vanilla cream, and mild toasted nuts.
Taste is of the same aromas with the same sugary blend that seems to fit together in an interesting mix.
Mouthfeel is sweet up front and fading to the back of the tongue in a medium bodied brew.
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 MoDog (927) - Griffith, Indiana, USA - MAY 11, 2009
11.2oz swing-top bottle, served in a shaker. This poured a hazy burnt orange hue with a thin, short-lived beige head. A small amount of lace was left around the glass. The aroma contained strong grapefruit, oranges, sour lemon, and also some heavy, sugary caramel. The flavor was bitter and somewhat sour. Bitter oranges along with sour lemon candy. Some caramel lurking underneth the sourness. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied and had a light to moderate amount of fairly aggressive carbonation. The flavors on display here didn’t really mesh well.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 MatSciGuy (893) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - JUN 28, 2009
[Bottle] shared by guerde. Pours a hazy gold with a massive khaki head. Aroma is old, faded hops, sweetish malt, lots of florals, and some banana. Flavor is mild floral hops, somewhat spicy, mild, light, crackery malt, light alcohol, and a bit of brett. I don’t see how this is an IPA, more of a BdG, but it is very tasty and unique.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 bgburdman9 (840) - Beavercreek, Ohio, USA - MAR 27, 2007
Poured a cloudy medium brown with a huge white head. Aroma was of some yeast and maybe a little belgianness. Flavor was sweet and a little hot for only being 7.5%. Not too sweet though, not to bad but definetily different.
