Opaque brown-orange, large small-bubble head that fades to cap. Aroma gives off fruity ale yeast as well as funk, some nice citric notes in bitter orange, and a noticeable sweetness reminiscent of English barleywines. Taste is very malty - toasty, caramely, quite an interesting taste really. Honeyed light fruits, some grass, hay, and must, spicy noble-like hop notes. Yeasty as well. To summarize: caramel, toast, grass, and yeast - all over the map, quite interesting. Finish is long and moderately bitter. Little detection of alcohol whatsoever. Truly complex and unique, not sure if I quite enjoyed it more than as a nice deviation, though.

Bottle: Clear and red with huge off-white head. Hops, grass, spices and brown sugar in the aroma. Flavour is hops, earthy, woods and bread with a bitter.

I can’t explain how incredible this beer is. Huge vinous flavors with complex fruit, caramel-toffee, sour yeast and earthy subtleties. This redefines what beer can be.

2006 bottle, #276. Poured a somewhat murky mahogany with an insane amount of beaten-egg-like head. Overtly malty aroma and some slight sour/lambic notes. Predominate walnut, cherry, toffee and some slight bitter lemon.

Consumed at the Pewaukee tasting. Brown, cloudy from the lees. Lightly funky, sweet, promising of goodness. Sour, tart, medium bodied, hop bitterness evident. A little dry astringency at the end.

Poured a very hazy light auburn. Smells of cider and a little vinegar. Tasted like cider with vanilla and a cherry highlight at the end. The sourness is moderate and enjoyable.

very carbonated. dark tan color with big white head with lots of yeast "chunks" in it. aroma is mainly yeast with some spiciness and some other aroma I can’t tell. flavor is also very yeasty, mostly dry with some sourness. very little malt flavor. not too bad....for a very different style than I’m used to.

UPDATED: MAR 1, 2008 The aroma is powerful and pleasing: sour apple, caramel, grass. Pours with a very dense creamy tan head . Upon tasting I found this beer SO well balanced! One need not strain to detect individual flavors - they are spread out in vivid technicolor: tangy citrus peel, sweet and mellow cake-like malts, and grassy, day at the park hops. Also detected a little spice and a little yeast funk. It’s like an extra rich Saison! In fact this is kinda like Fantome’s Bris Bon-Bon, but a little more interesting, if not quite luxurious in terms of mouthfeel. Unlike many Biere de Gardes, this beer doesnt seem overstuffed with the toungue fireworks. Well done! Highly recommended..

2006 750 ml bottle. IPA it’s not at all, but it is good, being a unique amalgam of Belgian blonde and saison tastes, with just a tiny hint of lambic sourness. Enjoyable and a bit lemony. If you like this, you’d also like Flemish Primitive.

very interesting beer, citrusy sour complex and pleasant - had it at Redcoat with mussels and calamari, would highly recommend with seafood
