Sample at Ale Wine & Spirits in Powell on 04/12/2012. The beer is a cloudy orange-amber color with a medium white head that diminishes slowly. Partial rings of lacing. The aroma is citrusy with some hops and malt in the background. Medium body with a floral and grassy hops character and notes of minerals and malts in the background. The finish is mildly bitter hops. Hard to characterize as "salty" despite the label. Decent overall.

Cask at Fountainhead. Not sure if this is still retired? Anyway, pours a somewhat hazy gold with a frothy head. Nose is a bit funky and tart, some fruity notes and yogurt. On tasting, some mild tartness. No coriander notes, otherwise I’d think Gose. Mild salty component and a nice fruity depth. Light Belgian yeast character as well. Pretty cool stuff!

Tasted at the Triple Rock Sour and Barrel Aged Fest on 2/12/2011. This Belgian Ale pours a medium orange gold color from the bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel, fruity, and sweet with a touch of salt. A medium to light bodied Belgian Ale. The malts are fruity, sweet and malty. The hops are earthy. A touch of saltiness throughout. Nice balance, Good carbonation. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

On cask tap at Red Light Red Light. Gold pour with finger bright white. Salty funk aroma. Taste is bread, yeast, lemon and salt. Seawater aftertaste. Weird.

Pours a cloudy golden orange color with a rather large white head. The nose is fairly sweet and malty with a nice bread character. The fleur de sel comes through nicely and gives the beer a subtle saltiness that plays nicely with the fruitiness from the yeast and hops. The flavor is quite yeasty and bready, almost a bit like a saison. The salt adds a touch of earthy character that works nicely. Medium bodied with high carbonation.

750 ml bottle, brewed in February 2010. Served in a tulip glass, the beer pours a hazy golden/amber color with about an inch white head that stayed around a long time. There’s also a good amount of lacing. The brew smells like citrus, apricots, salt, pears, and some herbs. It tastes like peppery spice, apricots, lemon peel, citrus, salt and also has a light herbal/floral flavor. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, it’s dry, refreshing, and is well carbonated. I think this is an interesting (and good) brew. It’s pricey at $17.99 a bottle, but I liked it and think it’s definitely worth a try.

750 ml bottle
The problem with BFM is that they make many great beers ... which then cost an arm and a leg by the time they hit local shelves. Were they cheaper I am sure I would have worked my way through many more of their sour lineup. Instead I opened this solid Belgian. A change of pace from their other releases as far as I can tell the light feel leaves you disappointed when the bottle is empty. It doesn’t quite live up to its price tag but then again it didn’t feel like an overpriced rarity either.
Aroma / Appearance - An ambient orange body shimmered as it sat waiting further inspection. A virgin white head graced the top like fresh powdery snow on a mountain top. The nose was salty almonds, lemons, and floral aspects. All of it blended with a dry feeling like a good bottle of champagne that doesn’t last long.
Flavor / Palate - Salty seafood hits the tongue before morphing into the texture and sensation of a packet of sea salt and vinegar chips. Citrus makes an appearance as does a dry feeling that comes from many light Belgian beers. Soft and easy going it doesn’t fatigue the palate at all. This was a nice release although at its price point one I am not likely to buy again even if I do run across it in the near future.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Kinz (2694) - Glen Allen, Virginia, USA - OCT 21, 2011
Bottle from Cap Ale Innsbrook, thanks to JD’s going away party. Slightly darkish yellow, faint haze, good white head. Aroma is lightly spicy and floral. Flavor is dry, light dried apricot, white pepper, and a bone dry floral bitterness on the finish. Can’t say I taste salt, but I think it quite probably contributes to the remarkable drying nature of this beer. Enjoyable beer.
