Pailhead (2323), Allen Park, Michigan, USA May 8, 2008 Updated: May 21, 2008 Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate cherries with some tartness, chocolate, caramel, light roast, and faint vanilla. It pours a dark brown with some faint orange highlights along the outer edges of the glass and a small tan head that lasts a minute or so. The flavor starts with cherry and light chocolate. The cherry flavors quickly turn tart through the middle and a roastiness comes in to play that clashes with the tartness. Roastiness lingers into the finish and mixes with some light coffee, light citrusy hops, and faint alcohol. I occasionally get a hint of metal that I could do without. Medium-bodied with minimal carbonation and a slick mouthfeel, but comes across a tad thin at times.
JCB (1066), Durham, North Carolina, USA Oct 10, 2008 11.2oz from The Wine Specialist, D.C. Very intrigued by the descriptions, and by previous beers I’ve had from BFM. Pitch black pour, with almost no carbonation and no head to speak. Not an oily pour by any means, and it turns out the body is relatively thin. The aroma is intriguing, with burnt malts, dank tea, and some faint sugary notes. As you sip it, some spice emerges ever so faintly in the burnt flavors, but not enough to my taste. There is a strong tobacco leaf presence in there, which is likely the tea. It’s not unpleasant, but it tends to overpower the vanilla and pepper, which are really struggling to emerge here. I really wanted to like this, but I found it merely okay. smith4498 (384), Miami, Florida, USA Oct 10, 2008 Pours dark brown with tan head. Sour roasted malt aroma. Not what you would expect from an impy stout. Tart taste with peppery spices, earthiness and some woody flavors. Surprisingly, I don’t taste any acohol. Medium to full body with average carbonation and a dry finish. It doesn’t taste like an impy stout to me, but I am really liking this beer. Pours a dark black colour with a thin tan head.
Aroma is bitter chocolate, tobacco, coffee, some dark fruitiness and slight sourness.
Flavour is a bit of vinegar-ish sour and thin overall, though I can get some of the tea in the flav. as well as some chocolatey malt and fruit sweetness trying to get through. A peppery presence towards the end as well and a dry bitter finish.
Sure is interesting. jake65 (1274), Meridian, Idaho, USA Oct 1, 2008 Cool little 11.2oz swingtop bottle! Great appearance is dark brown with a large creamy tan head. Nose is roasted malt, light cocoa, and coffee bitters. Tastes of dark chocolate and bitters. Must be the pepper... A little sweetness before a spicey and bitters twinge. Rather dry. Different take on the impy and overall fun to try. heemer77 (3782), Savannah, Missouri, USA Oct 1, 2008 Perfectly black body even when held to light. The thin head was light tan. Smells of sweet molasses and plums dominate the nose. There is also some some light coffee and milk chocolate. The taste has some bitter coffee and sweet, tart prunes. There is a nice vanilla note in the finish. There is too much sweet and tart going on here, but it’s an interesting change of pace.
