agl108 (384), Manayunk, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 23, 2008 750 mL bottle at Flat Rock Saloon, different than that pictured here. Poured hazy amber with thin white head. Started extremeley sweet and faded into a dry, slightly spicy finish. Expensive, but worth the price tag once for a try.
pcapest1 (4), , Maryland, USA does not count Jan 3, 2009 pours opaque, nice carbonation, good head. smells like a real lambic (though honestly i don’t smell much fruit, much less figs). i’m new to "real" lambics, and thought i disliked them, but this one is drinkable smith4498 (459), Miami, Florida, USA Dec 23, 2008 Pours hazy light amber with white head. Bready aroma with what I guess are figs. Lightly tart and sweet flavor with some spiciness. Lots of apple, pear, grape and citrus flavors also. Light to medium body with effervescent carbonation. Very much like a saison. Good stuff. ante (2591), Stockholm, Sweden Dec 4, 2008 Bottled. Pours out in a hazy amber colour with low creamy white foam. Yeast, wet wood, figs, mild blackberries and spices in the aroma. Medium-bodied with notes of imature berries, figs, wood, yeast and herbs. Spicy finish of yeast, figs, herbal hops, black currant and mild spices. Concentrated mouthfeel. BeerBelcher (809), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Nov 18, 2008
I split this beer, the last of those that I brought back from Belgium in my wooden leg, with SurlySober. I was initially dismayed by what I would characterize as a large amount of sediment at the bottom of the bottle, but with careful pouring what ended up in my glass was pretty attractive - golden and lightly effervescent. Aroma was floral and a touch spicy, and reinforced my initial champagne-like impression. Flavor was very malty for a Belgian ale with lots of baking bread notes and yeastiness. Mouthfeel was quite light and pleasant. I thought it to be quite good.
I would recommend this - just pour carefully. I bought this bottle at Beer Mania in Brussels. Doppelganger (1261), Oxford, Oxfordshire, England Oct 4, 2008 Bottle, from Noel Cuveliers, Abele. Copper orange pour with a thick layer of butter colored head. Very strange (for beer) and slightly too sweet raisin/fig aroma, some clove spice, but under that is a beautiful salt sea air quality. The two together are sort of strange. Green fruity grapeskin flavor, dry and peppery with a dry lemon finish. A distinctly old-fashioned sort of beer, unexpectedly rustic even for a saison, and even for Blauges. And yet, it’s really nice. Components are odd considered separately. But as a whole, it comes together really well.
