COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ale brewed with fig juice. A traditional style named for John Darby, preacher of temperance whose parishioners were oddly moved by a "soft drink" they insisted was just fig juice...

Very hazy orange/amber with a thick, lasting off-white head. Nice sweetish aroma. Some spicy corianderish notes. Fairly full-bodied and quite yeasty. Some sweet cherry and light bubble gum in the finish. Slightly tart, dryish finish. Pretty tasty, but I don’t really get any figgy character at all.

Sampled at the Milwaukee YEHa!05 courtesy of MIBRomeo: Hazy dark bronze pour has a lightly-lacing white head. Sweet, lightly fruity citrus and Belgian malty and yeasty aroma. Starts with tart, sour fruit backed with a malty base and a dry, tart finish. I’m not a big fan of the tartness, but with a little more balance, this could be quite nice.

(slightly aged) Very hazy golden-orange, with loads of little flecks, presenting themselves very conspiciously on the virgin-white, full head. Vegetables and a sweetness in the nose, probably due to the fig syrup. Bit sourish as well. Sourish - but not much - taste, faint spicey and some fruit. No sweetness at all in the taste - I guess due to the ageing. Young this is sweeter, betraying the fig character. Quite dry, bit sharp-sourish finish. Nice - but this is probably one of the few beers I prefer young.

Draught - Bruxellensis - A hazy light amber coloured beer. The aroma is funky and fizzy with some lemon notes. The taste is malty with banans and yeast additionally. Tasty and drinkable. Didn’t get figs!

UPDATED: DEC 12, 2005 Plump figs contribute to the citrusy hay aroma...Fluffiness almost overtakes the crunchy wheat and creates a dryness in the feel...Creative simplicity in the Belgian countryside...

Warning! Early amateur rating! Crisp beer. Sourish. Caramel and fruit. I guess it must be the figs imparting the sourness. Refreshing. Nice beer!

750 mL bottle purchased at Liquor Max in Loveland, CO. Pours sparkling amber with a large, frothy, off-white head, somewhat lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (bread, grain, hay, straw), average hops (flowers, grass), average yeast (horse blanket, earth) with notes of fig, grapes, and cask. Medium bodied, sticky texture, lively carbonation, and a bitter finish. Average duration, light sweetness, acidity, and bitterness.

Pours amber with a decent off white head. Smells pf figs (duh!), sweet malt, some citrus, spices and pepper. Tastes of figs, some raisins, lots of floral and wildflower hints. Palate is thick and oily. Finish is spicy with hints of pepper and figs. Very unusual but enjoyable.

Bottle from State Line. Turbid deep orangy pour with 2-finger off-white head. Aroma is funky yeast, hops, tangerine, spices. Tastes gueuezy, dry, very citric, with tangerine and some tart peachy/apricotty notes. Dense palate, very complex, and velvety. I didn’t get any figs in this. This is a very nice brew.

UPDATED: JUL 8, 2004 Superb off-white head with huge foamy lacing levitates above the light amber murky hue. Terrific looking! Aroma comes out extremely yeasty (sawdust, cobwebs), but well balanced by passion fruit notes (mango, figs, grapes). Very fruity on the tongue, dusty yeast, woody. Light citric acidity from the start to the beginning, balancing farmy bitterness in the second half. Yeasty aftertaste with a bit of malty acidity. Mouthfeel is top notch, meringous-like, very bubbly, airy, foamy. A contemplative and unique ale with tremendous garage character to set apart from other belgian ales.
