Very fruity aroma (pineapple?). Gold body but no head. Initial sweetness, little acidity, only bittterness is provided by slight spice & alcohol. Syrupy thick. Decidedly average ale from a pretty disapointing brewery.

UPDATED: NOV 16, 2003 Rerate: Sweet and doesn't hide the alcohol well, plus I'm Belgianed out, still, and probably for a while yet. But still something about this is good, even though I am also not a fan of this brewery! I think I really like the yeasty component...alot. Reduction from 5 months ago of .3. Original: 3/09/02: Incredible. Took Bov's advice on this gem, and ordered 3 from belgianshop.com. He's got the color perfect...golden, quite cloudy, with a very sticky head. The aroma when cold is different than when warm, which surprised me a bit. The cold aroma had a very small hint of a certain fruit I couldn't quite get: not pineapple, not raisin, and not banana. The yeasty, bread dough aroma was perfect (I like it even stronger!), the malt depth was excellent, in aroma and flavor. Hop bitterness lingers, but is replaced by a peppery finish that is of medium length. A complex beer, worth seeking out.

Head is initially large, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy dark yellow, dense tiny particles, bottle conditioned. Aroma is moderately malty (cookie), moderately yeasty (dough, mold), lightly hoppy (flowers), with notes of pineapple and alcohol. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Medium to full body, syrupy texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. Boring aroma, yeasty sour flavor.

UPDATED: FEB 20, 2003 Sweet yeasty aroma, quite potent, but only due to the fact that the alcohol shows through. Sweet palate, bitter finish, but there was something in here that totally didn't agree with me. I don't really think i'm a big fan of the Huyghe Brewery either, they seem to keep pumping out either overly sweet brews, or brews where the alcohol shows too much, this is no exception, no elegance.

Bold spicy yeast gales which sadly die down quite fast…Quite beautiful then quite vapid…Perplexing…

Lump Factor: Hard/Dense/Flex Speed Factor: medium to very slow. OK there is a bit of an orangeness about it (after 7 beers). Sweet, phat. This kinda alchol content needs to be a bit drier. Cheating sods just added loads of sugar and let the yeast do the talkin. Lazy Gits. Pass me another.

one my 3 favourite beers is now brewed by Huyghe which apparently bought Artelvelde ?! - dark orange colour, fine head, no lace, deep complexity of the aroma (cinnamon, orange, nutty), full-bodied, sweet followed by a great dry bitter, spicy and fruity finish - only one little touch under the original (like its alcohol content)
Earlier Rating: 11/12/2001 Total Score: 4.7
Well ... as this is one of my top 3 beers (with Rochefort 10 and Westvleteren 8), I think it is really time to put it in the database ! golden, transparent, nice fine foam; aroma: pastries, nut, complex, powerfull; flavor: perfumy, orange; long aftertaste - did I say fantastic ?

Sticky, alcoholic, tangerines, candy, yeasty, honey. Not my kind of brew. Thanks Psych_Prof!

Aroma is of white grapes, sugar, and alcohol. Flavors of yeast, belgian candy sugar, sweet apples, harsh alcohol, and butterscotch. Not a bad triple but drink this things a bit colder than most triples. The alcohol becomes nearly intolerable.

A tipical strong belgian ale......perhaps a little bit strong, the spicy flavour is not enough to cover the alcoolic taste of the beer and the carbonation is eccessive. Anyway a good beer
