brewandbbq (269), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Feb 25, 2008 Pours opaque black with some translucent, mahogany edging.
Barely a quarter-inch head developed, with an exagerated pour.
Aromatics filled with dark chocolate, espresso grounds, and smoldering embers.
Quite complex as it warms, with an earthy quality to the smoke, and vanilla in the finish.
The mouthfeel is on the thick side of medium, somewhat chewy and plenty tacky. Crisp and drying.
The pallet has a sturdy porter profile. Plenty big and robust, with acrid malts, bitter chocolate, and roasted coffee beans.
Quickly following through on each sip is a large smoke character. Enough smoldering char to bring forward an almost funky, barnyard nod.
Alcohol is warming and bitterness is firm and drying. All other hopping is nill.
Finishes with lingering oaky char, bitter chocolate, espresso, and suggestion of creosote.
Now *this* is a smoked porter.
WeeHeavySD (2940), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Feb 19, 2008 1100th rating, 70th of this beer, bottle via trade with Glouglouburp, decided to open this pretty much because my girlfriend loves smoked beers and this is the 2nd rated Smoked, and well I had it. Pours black with a half finger light brown head. The nose is ridiculously smoky and meaty. Its pretty damn hardcore. Taste is incredibly smoky and full of smoke and burnt malts. This is a crazy smoked beer. Its almost crazy intense. This is a crazy beer, and pretty much defines the style for me. puzzl (2579), New York, New York, USA Feb 15, 2008 Tap at Vices et Versa. Beer of the trip. Easily. I’d place this in my top 20 very quickly. Now I just need to score some bottles of it. Very smoky, clean, hammy aroma. Slight mint and chocolate. Good complexity. Taste is uber-smoky, with a perfect porter to back it up. Finish is intensely awesome. All this is compounded by an absolutely beautiful pour with immaculate lacing down the glass. I loved this beer. MaxxDaddy (261), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Feb 12, 2008 On tap @ Vices et Versa. I couldn’t believe it when I saw this on the tap list online before our trip to Montreal. I had been wanting to try this one for quite a while. It didn’t let down at all. Pours black with small tan head, though leaves a small trail of lacing on the glass. Aroma is a carefully crafted mix of roasted malts, chocolate, and smoke. Plenty enticing. Upon tasting, the smoke comes out first, hickory and bacon abound. Later on, the porter peeks out with chocolate and coffee. Very well balanced. Thick mouthfeel with a roasty finish. A true treat; the beer of the trip! Black, small head, low retention. Nose hints at chocolate, raisins and some smoke (hickory). Raisin sweetness, chocolate/roasted grains bitterness and a lingering smokiness, which I find well controlled. It adds some deepness to an already complex brew. Body is round and the finale has good lenght. Very well done! Viper666 (614), Greenfield Park, Quebec, Canada Jan 28, 2008 Bouteille 341ml. De couleur noire et opaque.
