zathrus13 (1288), Mount Laurel, New Jersey, USA Oct 12, 2007 Dark brown/black, with a brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, smoke, and chocolate. Flavor is chocolate, smoke, roasted malt, and some caramel. Medium body. Nice. Thanks to Francois Mtl for this bottle. boboski (1095), Alabama, USA Oct 3, 2007 Pours with a dark tan head that slowly and barely recedes. Micro-dot lacing. The body is very dark brown, almost black, oily and nearly completely opaque. The aroma is not heavily smoked, but the smoke is adequate to say the least - very meaty with little astringent ashy notes, just lovely. Chocolate notes are full throttle, streaming in a solid line from the glass and into the deepest reaches of the nasal cavities. Roasted grains and toffee/caramel notes are pure, vibrant and perfectly integrated into the nose. Alcohol is only mildly noticeable. This smells like ice cream, with smoky coffee, chocolate and goodies. Awesome, nearly a ten. The flavor is mildly lactic and smoke is partially hidden behind a milky affront, initially. Smoke is soft and fluctuates between very mildly acrid and highly sweet. Cocoas and light sugars blend seemlessly with roasty malt. Sweetness is medium, occasionally drifting to medium-high. Bitterness is low and hidden in a smoky mist. The finish is lightly bitter, medium sweet, chocolatey and coffee-laden. The mouthfeel is medium-full bodied and lightly sticky, softly carbonated(fizzy pockets), ridiculously smooth. An impressive beer, yummy. mgumby10 (1844), Jupiter, Florida, USA Oct 3, 2007 Courtesy dsnowden. Pours a dark brown with a small off tan head. Great nose. Big chocolatey smoke aroma, carame malts, and morning bacon. very nice. The flavor is smoky, but not overpowering smoke, with a big chocolate essence and syrupy malts. The mouthfeel is full flavored and pretty thick bodied. Not overly sweet, but he finish has some dessert sweetness to it. Actually pretty rich tasting with a smoky, yet sweet aftertaste. I really enjoyed this brew alot. TheCheeseMan (538), Saint Cloud, Florida, USA Oct 3, 2007 Updated: Oct 10, 2008Color is a deeply hued brown, with glints of a coal like black peeking through. Aroma is smoked, but is very balanced with the the malts, hints of cocoa, brown sugar and some toffee seem to be here as well. Flavor is, like the aroma, balanced and multi faceted. Dark chocolate, smoke and malts all living together in harmony. Absolutely awesome. DuffMan (2721), the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, Canada Oct 3, 2007 Pours an oily black-brown with a deep mahogany tinge when held against the light. Dense dark tan pad of a head has excellent low retention and generates lace until the final sip. This looks stunning! Hardwood smokiness is the first aroma to register, followed by a coarse pungent leatheriness. A smokey, bitter chocolate palate feels rich and thick in the mouth. There is not so much a fruity quality as there is an acidity to this beer that keeps it from becoming cloying. There is a sound woody or peach-pit bitterness in the finish. This was a huge treat for me, I can’t believe I’ve been saving this for so long! fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA Oct 1, 2007 12 oz bottle shared with toncatcher. Lots of smoke in the aromas of this dark dark beer with plenty of tan head. Some dark fruits and chocolate under all the smoke. Flavors were very similar. Coffee came in as well. And Smoke. Pretty good stuff. shintriad (698), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Sep 23, 2007 Holy mother of God, this is good...maybe the thickest beer I’ve ever drank, it’s like a melted Slushie. Only the flavours are extremely rich, dark coffee, chocolate and smoke, some alcohol and a lot leafy hops in the finish. Bourbon-like, gritty, lasts in the mouth. Maybe some notes of cilantro. A bit off-kilter but outstanding and original. Lou18 (1353), West Paterson, New Jersey, USA Sep 22, 2007 This was all smoke to me. Looked like smoke, smelled like smoke, tasted like smoke, with some wood and earth. Cool idea,
