Smoke owns the character of this deep, chewy nectar. Lots of molasses, coffee, toffee, and chocolate notes linger underneath the smoldering malt mayhem. Some say this one is the Lagavulin of beer and as it warms, more in your face flavor reveals itself. Not much to look at, this beer has little head to it, but the dull dark brown ureminds me of a weeklong camping trip with a lot of time by the old fire. Some mild lactic hints far off in the distance that gives it some semblance of balance, if not cheesiness. This beer was built to pair with sharp cheddar and salty crackers. All features of this beer bows down to the smoke. What a brew! Tres bien!

UPDATED: JAN 7, 2012 Une bière dont je regrette vivement la disparition. Riche texture qui soutient bien le chocolat et le café. La finale fumée est dense et attendu à chaque gorgée. Impeccable.

Black of color with a brown head. An aroma of roasted malt, burnt, weak liqurice and sweets. A flavor of roasted malt, liqurice and sweets. An oily texture.

Bottle. poured a clear dark brown color with orange highlights. Lots of smoke in the nose. Campfire, smoked bacon, and a bit of toffee. Medium bodied and dryish. Smoky, roasty malt flavor. Pretty nice.

Bottle thanks to Dany. Pours a pure black color with a very small bubble of white head. The aroma is massive sweet roast and smoke. A nice flavor of vanilla, char, smoke, roasted malts, light heat, some dark fruit. Very ashy and burnt. A thin palate. Really tasty, dusty and some sweetness plus smoke that resembles bourbon.

341ml bottle. Pours deep dark brown with a touch of reddish cola tinge. Minimal light tan head. Smoke aromas over a caramel malt, toffee sweetness, anise, toast and some roast coffee bean. Medium-light body, medium carbonation. Smoke flavours are balanced well with a nice acidity, roast and chocolate.. Finish is medium, nice and satisfying.

Thx to cfrancis for this one. Ultra dark brown with a small light brown cap that prefers to hug the edges. Considerable warming out of choice on this one. Scotch like peaty aroma is very nice and compliments the dark chocolate feature as well as the deep roast qualities. Smells salty - similar to a smoked ham. Plum, mildly charcoaled wood and I can’t get cooked beets out of my head... what the hell is that about? The aroma fits right into my favorite aromas in a beer. Love the chocolate here.. and come cherries me thinks as well. Rockin’ the Ratt as well - oof! Tastes like tart salty chocolate if that is possible outside of a beer. Some obvious sour flavours from beginning to end of my glass. Cherries, big roast, more sourness.. the sourness took me off guard at the beginning but now just adds to the intrigue of this brew. Smoke and a bit of charcoal, molasses. Any chocolate that I found early is gone now. I’m starting to wonder if my palate is quitting on me here... some ichiban noodles will fix that. Smells amazing, tastes decent enough - the taste is pretty cool but it’s a pisser because I was hoping for something similar to the aroma. Kind of fascinating how the two are completely different. Slick feeling beer that leaves lots of coating and a long lasting suckable tartness. That’s hot.

341mL bottle, at least a few years old. Poured deeper brown with a short, but well-retained tan head. The aroma picked up a hefty dose of liquid smoke, smoked beechwood, and a bit of hickory along with sour-ish oak.. chocolate and molasses beneath.. overall smoky, woody, and very enjoyable. The flavor was also centered around the smoke, building off of rising coffee and molasses at the core.. smoke of all forms around, with a lot of wet and woody character.. tart woody notes, campfire smoke, and coffee on the warm finish. Medium-bodied and very dry on the palate.. lots of roast and lots of smoke.. mellowed out a bit with age, and certainly in a good way.

(bottle - 341 ml) Another big thanks to Chad for trading us this one. Dark black with a thick tan head. Big and smoky aroma with lots of wood and roasted malt notes. Flavor starts off with a meaty and smoky flavor and moves to a rather sweet and malty middle. Dark roasted malts and some chocolate permeate the middle and impart a lightly smoked but semi-sweet chocolate finish. Really good.

12 oz. bottle; thanks to Sammy for the trade a while back; pours thin, roasty brown with thin tan head; chalky dry roast with mild meaty aromas; drinks with a thin texture with lovely mix of smoke and chocolate; dry, ashy, chocolate, yummy stuff; dough, smoke, roast; killer brew; I;ve been digging the smoked lagers of late, but this reminds me not to forget about the great smoked porters and stouts; and thanks to Fred82 I’ve got another bottle!!
