3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 larsga (4655) - Oslo, NORWAY - JAN 27, 2006
Smallish, light beige, normal head over chestnut brown body, vaguely hazy at the bottom of the bottle. Deep, sweet, malty aroma with caramel and cardboard notes. (Possible that the beer is a bit old.) Bitter, malty taste with roasty, hoppy aftertaste; malt somewhat toffee-like. Burnt toast lingering. Good, and interesting, but not great.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 after4ever (4500) - Brier, Washington, USA - JAN 28, 2008
330. Thanks, glouglouburp! Ruby red amber with very slim grayish film. Big woody nose. Medium body, soft carb. Woody, somewhat caramelly, resiny. Very dry and piney. Dryest IPA I’ve ever had, and easily the best dry IPA I’ve had. If there’s anything I’ve learned this weekend about Quebecois brewers, they make sure to make their beers as unique and distinct as they can while making them as well as they can make them. And they all seem to have *really* cool-looking labels.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 tiggmtl (4475) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - FEB 8, 2004
Citrus hops and big malt balance nicely in the aroma. Reddish-copper colour with medium pillowy head that recedes fully. This beer is all about balance - malt and hops dance together on the tongue with a lasting bitterness in the finish. Nice full mouthfeel. A true work of art. Bottle.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 blankboy (4437) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - OCT 2, 2006
Bottle courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours a hazy dark amber-copper with an average size mostly-lasting off-white head. Slightly mild but pleasant hoppy aroma backed by caramel malt and some spices. Flavour of toasty caramel malt and UK hops -- also a little bready and spicey and with a fairly long bitter finish. Medium bodied. I prefer the Cascade and Cascade Plus but this is still pretty good.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 muzzlehatch (4425) - Burlington, Vermont, USA - MAR 2, 2004
Bottle. Deep maple color, little head. Sweet malty/bready nose, hints of cherry and a bit of piney hops. Quite full-bodied, initially quite sweet but brooding powerful hop-vultures descend and an arid steppe with a few sturdy citrus-tree outrcroppings stretches as far as the eye can see, and the tongue can feel, in the wonderfully strong finish. Odd and enticing.
2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 j12601 (4415) - Poughkeepsie, New York, USA - MAY 4, 2009
Bottle from Bonisoir in Montreal. Pours a deep hazy brown with a fairly hefty tanned head. Loads of malt, bordering on barley wine aromas, with touches of plum and fruit. First impressions are that there is something odd going on here, as this is darker than pretty much any IPA I’ve seen, and comes out smelling like something full of malt, and not too heavy on the hops. Medium to thick body (especially for an IPA), and very malty, but not overly sweet. Finishes with a good amount of bitterness. I really have no idea what to make of this… it’s not really an IPA in my book (and blind I’d never peg it as one). More like a hoppy brown ale. Marginally drinkable (though I dumped about half of the bottle), but I certainly wouldn’t repeat this one.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 presario (4133) - Stampede City, Alberta, CANADA - JUL 14, 2005
Malt and hop aroma. Spicy hop start to the flavour. Rough edged hop middle. Light body at the finish but the hops are lasting. Overall the hops are a little harsh. You get used to it halfway through the first glass and can find the sweetness underneath. Still doesn’t have the tastiness that makes you want a second.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 badgerben (4116) - Blaine, Minnesota, USA - MAY 31, 2005
Dark copper with a thin head. Aroma of wine, perhaps a Pinot Noir, which is very unexpected for an IPA. Strong malt base, almost like a dry dopplebock, with a moderately bitter end. No floral or Pine Sol hits in this one. I would have liked a bit of either, but overall this was quite a good IPA!
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 5000 (4104) - Hardened Liver, Washington, USA - MAY 1, 2004
Bottle pours a deep translucent amber, large off-white frothy head, with good lacing. Caramel, toffee, and subtle hops on the nose. Slight milk sugar aroma as well. Dark fruit, sweet caramel/toffee, and light malts up front. This seems completely different from most IPAs that I’ve ever had. Finally, some bittereness emerges halfway through this beer and onto the finish. While it has a decent aroma and flavor, it finishes rather flat, without much flavor cept to say a slight bitterness. Maybe I am just too used to PNW varieties, but this one seems somewhat mild in comparison. A bit maltier than most, which is fine, but I dont get any sharp hop bite that I was hoping for. Still a decent offering, even if slightly unusual.   Thanks goes out to Rastacouere for the trade!
