| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Jul 5, 2005 Bottle: Poured a dark color ale with a huge foamy dark head with slightly better then average retention. Aroma of strong roasted malt with some lingering sweetness. Taste has a strong toffee taste bordering on molasses, which is more or less interesting. Body is about average with a slight alcohol burn at the end. Good but nothing to really write home about. mrkimchee (1414), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Dark brown, reddish color with a minimal head, this brew is heavy on the alcohol, both in the nose and flavor. Although the taste is malty, the alcohol is the dominant flavor. ClarkVV (3578), Allston, Massachusetts, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jun 2, 2005 Updated: Dec 4, 20062005 bottle from the generous MartinT, shared with OldGrowth on 5/28/2005. Clear, magenta tinged amber body. Moderate white head slowly recedes to a ring. Thick toffee in the nose, rich maple syrup, some alcohol detracts. Flavor has more toffee, and more alcohol. Anise on the finish. Plant roots or something that gives a earthy/floral mix. Some light yeast notes on the finish, but then a big burn lingers. As it warms and breathes, the alcohol really comes forth and ruins the experience for me. At 9.5 abv, I really think this one needs a lot more body, and could handle some hop flavor to take the edge of the alcohol burn. Medium to medium-full body, moderate carbonation. Dusty, dry mouthfeel. OldGrowth (1408), North Carolina, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 30, 2005 Bottle, with ClarkVV. Good nose, fruity malty. Toffee/caramel, maple, fig/date. Clean reddish brown color. Good head that faded kinda quick. Bittersweet flavors, same as aromas, with a bakers chocolate addition. Alcohol dominates the flavors though. Medium body, creamy syrupy mouthfeel, roasted bitter finish. Good rich fruity beer, ABV heat could be a downer, though not so much for me. Thanks Clark.
