JCapriotti (1378), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Jun 26, 2006 Chocolate mahoganey body. Fizzy tan head. Aroma has full malt with slight hop.
Mmm... good flavor... great mix of sweet flavors (coffee cake, brown sugar, fruit) with hints of peat/smoke. Uh... I didn’t take very good notes, but I’d say overall the aroma isn’t an awful lot different from an average, decent scotch ale. Of course, I was more concentrating on the yummy flavor... ogivlado (3036), Zagreb, Croatia Jun 20, 2006 Courtesy of and shared with Doggythedog -thanks ! <!-- br -->
Bottled(341ml), - licorice orange, definitely Jaffa cakes, nose; sweet malty and roasted aroma with nice chocolate notes and slight alcohol hints, bitter finish
Doggythedog (1541), Split, Croatia Jun 14, 2006 Updated: Oct 4, 20060.341l bottle courtesy of Sasquatch911 (thanks a lot Francois !!!) shared with ozujsko. Its presentation (aroma and appearance) might just be the best I’ve seen in a beer. Beautiful dark red/black, small but thick and persistant tan head. The nose was brilliant. Jaffa cakes, or, more closely, the orange liquor used in the best stracciatella icecream mixed with noble milk chocolate. Hmm... my notes are almost illegible here, but there’s something "almost"... guess almost no alcohol.....sounds right, because I could feel very little in the nose (though ozujsko did feel some when he opened the bottle). Some coffee can be found too. Man, I could smell this for days. The taste is a bit underwhelming after the genius that is the nose. Sweet maltiness that felt a bit Belgian (but not much), alcohol (not assertive (and not surprising, considering that I’ve heard the alcohol is actually above 9.5)), coffee, roasty bitterness, a bit lighter than I expected it to be, some orange jelly and a touch of chocolate liquor. Pure class. I only wish that the taste lived up to the nose. Thanks again Francois ! beerbiere (101), Montréal, Quebec, Canada May 2, 2006 1st batch (identified 4e de 1000) probably around a year old. Dark-brown-burgundy color, nice compact creamy head did not last long but left some laces. Aroma of roast grains, caramel, rhum. Flavors gain from aging. I get strong licorice notes (which I did not notice with earlier versions), dark chocolate, coffee and alcohol burn and as others mentionned burnt caramel!? I was pleased that the metallic taste of younger ones shifted towards a pleasant but yet intense roastiness. Long mouthfeel and sustained after-taste. At this lifestage, it ressembles more of an imperial stout than a scotch ale. I definetely prefer this one to the second version which I find lacks the roastiness and feel much more unidimensional (sweet). I am eager to try an older version... Strongly recommended. Pailhead (2572), Allen Park, Michigan, USA Apr 8, 2006 Bottle: Courtesy of HogTownHarry via trade. Nice aroma with lots of chocolate, caramel, cream, and hints of coffee. Pours a transparent reddish-brown with an insignificant off-white head. Nice malt presence with chocolate, caramel, toffee, and a hint of smoke. Finishes lightly bitter. A solid Scotch Ale. blankboy (3165), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Apr 5, 2006 Bottle, "2nd batch". Pours a clear deep dark ruby with a small diminishing off-white head. Very nice aroma of sweet malt, caramel, some woodyness, dark fruit, hops and alcohol. The sweet malty flavour has everything the aroma has along with some wine-like characteristics, mild Scotch and a nice light bitter finish -- complex and quite flavourful. Alcohol is very well hidden. Medium bodied. To me, this is closer to a Barley Wine then a Scotch Ale but whatever it is it’s damn good and I look forward to having it again. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA Apr 5, 2006 12 oz bottle thanks to Sasquach911. Dark Ruby pour with a decent head that faded quickly. Aromas were excellent. Lots and lots of malt. Molassas, toffee, caramel, buttery roasted nuts, anise, prunes. Flavors were a sweet example of the same. Very malty throughout. Anise and alcohol in the middle. More anise in the finish with quite the warming effect. Very tasty stuff. Thanks a bunch Fransios. MikeMac (185), Wyandotte, Michigan, USA Mar 18, 2006 Aquired in trade from Siroy, Poured a transperent brown to red with a light off white head that dissapeared quite quickly Aromas were burnt with roast malt and toffee some hints of fruit in there. Flavor was suprisinglt full compared to the aroma. A explosion to be exact.Roasty bready chocolate and a nice hop balance to tie it all together.
