biz82 (1328), austin, Texas, USA Mar 12, 2006 Dark red with little head. Sweet candy and burnt caramel aroma with some floral hops. Notes of oak and wet dog. Sweet candy like flavor, again with flower like flavors and some hints of nail polish. Big, smooth body. Complex enough to satisfy with elements of perfection. cb (809), Wheat Ridge, Colorado, USA Mar 6, 2006 Aroma was that of wood and slightly burnt malt. Hue of dark amber crested with dry wheat. A ton of brown sugar, walnuts and a little maple in the body. Strong vinous finish mingled with bready goodness and more malt. Delicious. Made me want to rate again. HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Mar 5, 2006 Bottle (341ml). I really love a good scotch ale, so here goes. Poured opaque ruby-brown with a small diminishing beige rocky head. Very malty aroma, sweet and roasty, decidedly present alcohol, lots of fruit - plum, prune, raisin - and some chocolate , vanilla and dare I suggest; oatmeall? As above, but noticeable hops and more chocolate - very much like a christmas chocolate liqueur in it (rum?), raisins and maybe applejack - quite sweet, the light hops and decidedly not light alcohol balance it a bit, but very malty indeed. Nicely carbonated and sticky mouthfeel, alcoholic ... dang this is nice, probably the best on-style scotch ale I’ve had (I enjoy the Belhaven Wee heavy more) - thanks for this one, turg! BBB63 (4199), La Porte, Indiana, USA Mar 4, 2006 Bottle from MartinT and enjoyed with Emily and Jeff: A nice ruby brown hue with a minimal off-white head and almost no lace, it was a bit oily and clinging however. The aroma has notes of plum, raisin, and currants along with some soft grains, a hint of anise and peat, caramel, molasses, and a light vinous nature: It is quite inviting! The palate detects a sugary and tawny port sweetness with lots of ripened fruit in the background. Additional subnotes of vanilla, clean wood, sea salt, and white pepper come about every once in awhile. The feel is lush and oily and a stinging bite for a brief moment on the finish. A top notch brew that left me wanting more. Pushing the envelope of the Scotch Ale genre and that is a good thing here. Diogène (543), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Mar 1, 2006 341 ml bottle from the second batch. Very dark brown with almost no head. Aroma is vineous, notes of alcohol, caramel, roasted malt and honey. This is pretty syrupy. Taste is sweet, with definite presence of honey, roasted malt and a long hops aftertaste. The 9,5% of alcohol is well hidden. Another very good brew from Bièropholie. Siroy (220), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Feb 18, 2006 [ Bottled ; chilled ; dates are unknown ; 2nd batch ]
A fully diminushing average fizzy off-white head that tops up a clear dark mahogany body. Moderate lacing. No particules. Aroma is moderate nutty /woody/molasse while hops are light pine Also, there are evident traces of honey. Initial flavor is moderate sweet /caramel/honey with a touch of vanilla while development is medium sweet. Finish is long and sweet. medium to full body... creamy texture... Soft carbonation...
The high alcohol taste combined with the sweetness and the roasted nose of the previous batch has left more places to a more complex taste with pleasant woody tones and red fruits. The mouthfeel was improved as well. 3Vandoo (16), Quebec, Canada Feb 1, 2006 A nice burgundy beer with a great beige head. Smells of some cherry flavours, alcohol, fruity and malt, when at the end of the drinking experience a strong coffee smell emerge very purgeant followed by the malt.
The taste is weird, a strong note of alcohol hits you at first with a sourness and some sulfuric taste. Not that I dislike but it is odd, then a malted roasted coffee taste follows. This beer reminds me more of a Barley Wine than a scotch al but a great warmer I tell you.
