larsga (2937), Oslo, Norway Jan 7, 2006 Medium fine-laced light brown head over deep dark red body through
which light can just barely make it. Powerful sweet aroma of molasses
and syrup with notes of coffee, oil, and wild berries. Aroma also
somewhat bread-like. Taste is faintly sourish molasses with notes of
wild berries and burnt syrup. Aftertaste is peppery coffee with oily
hop notes. Alcohol heat lingers in the mouth. This is a great beer! Like a powerful imperial stout, but
with more flavour. Especially the berry-like notes really make this
stand out from your normal imperial stout. How they can call this a
scotch ale is beyond me. joss (3632), Garching b. München, Germany Dec 31, 2005 Bottle - sampled at the RBESP 2005
Chestnut colouring, creamy brown head. Molassis, chocolate and nut aroma notes.
Nutty, slightly herbal flavors, sugary.
Somewhat oxidized, a bit flat, sticky oily mouthfeel - in a good way. Smells of malt and caramel. No head. Taste of candy and frutis. Jeppe (2638), Ølbutikken, Denmark Nov 25, 2005 Sampled at RBESG 2005. Dark amber colored with a red gleam and a foamy light brown head. Roasted chocolaty aroma, sharp with some alcohol and buttery notes. Sweet slightly roasted flavor with notes of coffee and yeast. Quite sharp and biding and a little unbalanced. Interesting style, it reminds me of a mix between a stout and a Belgian ale. turg (156), Quebec, Canada Nov 20, 2005 Bottle 341ml Appearance: Deep dark brown in colour. Aroma: Malty with notes of caramel and alcohol. Flavor: strong malt, brown sugar, caramel. hopdog (5527), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 11, 2005 12oz bottle acquired in a trade (sorry, I didn’t note from who - let me know if it was from you!). Poured a dark and clear mahogany color with a larger sized off white head. Aromas of peat, toffee and some smoke. Earthy. Tastes of toffee, bourbon, caramel and some dark fruits. A touch of alcohol in the finish. TomDecapolis (3130), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 10, 2005 Thanks to Hopdog. Pours a dark ruby amber with a small off white lacing head. Aroma is caramel, peet, slight smoke with an overall sweetness. Flavor is similar to the aroma with some bitterness and a little dry. JoeMcPhee (4893), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Oct 25, 2005 Thanks to Turg for this one. 341 ml bottle. Deep ruddy brown colour, very thick sticky tan head. Initial aroma is of sweet caramel malt, toffee, slightly vineous. Light earthiness underneath the sweet aroma. A bit of fruit and salty licorice aroma. Seems to remind me of a barleywine more than a scotch ale. Flavour is sweet, anise/licorice, salt, and a touch of soy is the initial impression. Peppery flavour and a fairly alcoholic mouthfeel as well. Salty nuttiness lingers along with a fairly assertive bitterness. A bit too salty and licorice when its cold. Strangely, as it warms, the salt and licorice notes fall back and some more malt sweetness comes forward. After about 30 minutes and 14-18 degrees C, it actually become very balanced, spicy earthy hops come forward matching up against sweet vineous malt, light alcoholic pepper and a lingering bitter finish. Quite a complex and challenging brew.
