csbosox (1076), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA Oct 11, 2005 341ml bottle. Served at 13.5°C/~56.5°F in my NB worthy glass. My Montreal trip is 17 days away, I’ll try to drink a Quebec beer every day until I run out. The beers pours a deep dark red, almost brown with a wispy khaki colored head. The aroms is sweet malt, caramel, maple syrup, light molasses, with light floral hints. The initial taste is malt, cocoa, caramel, and kind of a nutty flavor. Following is alcohol tinged with dark fruits, nutty, and chocolately. The finish is more alcohol and some sourness that keeps the malt from being too much. The aftertaste is dark fruit compote. Pretty good stuff. Thanks to BeerBuzzMontreal for sending me this one. egajdzis (3602), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 9, 2005 Poured a mahogany color with a light tan, sticky head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate, caramel malts, smoke, nuts, cognac, maple syrup, some butterscotch, and faint alcohol as well. Smoke, chocolate and nuts in the taste, lots of smoke, dried fruits, with faint caramel, and alcohol in the finish. Philip (436), Illinois, USA Sep 22, 2005 Sampled at the monthly meeting of the Champaign-Urbana beer club. Thanks to whomever brought this one. A tasty Scotch ale with the caramel and data and maple syrup notes. This finished with some warmth, but the 9.5 is a surprise to me. Given that, I wish I’d have some to cellar. All in all, a tasty drink that requires further exploration. duff (5474), Surrey, Greater London, England Sep 13, 2005 Bottle. Quite sticky and sweet. Sweet being something i always associate with a scottish ale. Caramel and chocolate, with some soy sauce stickyness, slightly syruppy. Warming finish. Rich and full bodied. argo0 (6861), Washington DC, USA Sep 8, 2005 (341ml bottle) Clear garnet body with tan head. Aroma is sweet, caramel, molasses, dark fruit, faint peat. Taste is sweet, caramel, brown sugar, roast, some peat, plum, light coffee. Some alcohol burn in the finish. Sticky full body. Enjoyable sipping beer. Engelsmann (653), Copenhagen, Denmark Aug 30, 2005 Bottle at RBESG 2005. Pours a dark brown, with a tan head. Aroma is sweet malts, some alcohol, rasins and prunes. Taste is sweet malty, caramel, fruity prunes. some alcohol burning kook (2034), Perth, Western Australia, Australia Aug 26, 2005 RBESG05: Sweet caramel and alcohol in nose. Warming feel. Raisins and caramel in flavour. Brown with a tan head. Quite complex, nice. JPDIPSO (4865), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA Aug 25, 2005 Deep chestnut color w a hint of orange when held to the light. Moderate, dense head of light tan bubbles that settles to a thin covering. Holy S*** 9.5%? - just looked closer at the label. Didn’t prepare myself for one this strong, but I’m up for the challenge. Rich malty aromas, with some wild flower honey and a hint of peat in the background. This is a dopplebock ale on steroids. Rich malt flavors pave the path with light fruit and flowers strewn in the way. My malt love root thrive on this one. Smooth feel, with just a tingle of carbonation to keep things from getting to heavy on the palate. A dry, just finished with a cigarette type linger what bitter and mildly annoying. Otherwise this one is a good malt monster in my book. Thanks Beerbuzzmontreal for this fine selection.
