The flavor is sweet malty and roasted, but also with some notes of alcohol. Thanks Stephen (tiggmtl) for bringing this to RBESG, since I couldn’t find it when I was in Montreal. Nose full of lovely roasted malt. Sweetish body yet with rather dry, roasted notes and a marked finishing bitterness for balance. And indeed this is a balanced and harmonious brew. 120805 omhper (12180), Stockholm, Sweden

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 11, 2005 Fin du Monde glass helped in building up a superbly laced creamy beige head. Body is rubyish copper, dark, but far from opaque. Nose is a bit subtle as pointed out already. For a 9.5% scotch ale, I don’t know if I’m looking for subtlety in flavor deployment. With efforts though, we encounter pleasant floral hops complimenting a severe dark malts profile unveiling deep toffeeish honey, almost buttery. Taste is initially sweet, malty (raw barley), herbal (clover), honeyish, round. Strong dryness emanates in second half hinting at a smokiness that never really develops. Instead, we are facing a tarry strong grassy bitterness. Very earthy finish, slightly mineral, rich, meal-like filling cerealic character, almost like a plate of oatmeal, evolving into tobacco reminiscent ashey post taste. Roasted honey.. hmm.. A very surprising beer. I’d certainly be most curious to try an unpasteurized version... Luscious mouthfeel though, well rounded, somehow sticky and dry in a comfortable way all while possessing this inviting tiny bubbles carbonation. In fact, I’d be curious to retry it in just a few months as this came up a bit harsh and immature, yet potential loaded. hopdog (5552), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA

Poured a dark and clear mahogany color with a larger sized off white head. Aromas of peat, toffee and some smoke. Earthy. Tastes of toffee, bourbon, caramel and some dark fruits. A touch of alcohol in the finish.
