3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 hawthorne00 (1857) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - MAY 9, 2013
Bottle. Black with a tan head. Aroma of blackcurrants, coffee, vanilla, aniseed, chocolate, brandy, molasses. Silky mouthfeel, lowish carbonation. Taste is sweet and chocolatey with quite firm roasted and coffee flavours, bitterness that counters the sweetness very effectively for a while, but things get a little cloying as the glass empties. Gently woody at the end with lingering spiced coffee. Nice, enveloping, but wearing as it warms.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 ComradeK (732) - Blue Mountains, AUSTRALIA - MAY 6, 2013
340ml bottle. Pours an opaque black, with a medium beige head, which lasts well and leaves good lacing. Sweet milk chocolate and whipped cream notes mix with mild coffee in the aroma. Mild herbal hops up front sit over a base of creamy milk chocolate. The chocolate persists into the mid-palate, with the hops being replaced by mild, bittersweet coffee. Irish coffee notes come through in the finish. The flavours in this stout are fairly simplistic, yet pleasant enough, making for a quite enjoyable sweet stout.

Bottle @ home via trade. I can’t remember who sent me this, but thanks! South African tick. Pours a dark brown appearance with a creamy brown head. Very roasty, black coffee, thick chocolate, caramel/molasses, vanilla, intense aroma. Burnt/tar, anise, roasty dark chocolate, a bit fruity, quite oaky/vanilla/coconut flavor. Pretty tasty.

Shortlived beige head over brown-rimmed black beer. Serious chocolate nose, bit of mocha, hints at fusels or brandy/Bourbon; vanilla. Molasses, liquorice, dry-bitter finish. Bit lame in comparison to the nose. Roasted bitter in the aftertaste. Gristslick, but light bodied, certainly for the ABV claimed. Nose is really amazing; the rest, however, rather... ubiquitous. Many thanks to Afrikoaner M.
