3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 NachlamSie (2135) - USA - JAN 31, 2007
UPDATED: JAN 20, 2009 Draught. It was such a chore to locate Edenton’s Horniblow tavern, so I’m glad that they had something tasty like this available. The pour is opaque red/black with a tin tan head. The nose is very thick of chewy, roasted coffee. The flavor is rich of a fresh brewed cup of coffee with cream and a hint of chocolate. The java presence seems very real in this, second only to the intensity of Bells Java Stout in my experience. Overall, the flavor is slightly acidic with a sturdy mocha foundation. The beer almost seems one dimensional, but it does pack the complexity of a good, rich cup of joe.

Bomber split with Tronraner. The pour is very dark brown, nearly black, with some red hues. Ah, the rich coffee scent I recall is intact here. I could use more obnoxiously overpowering coffee, but this definitely gets the job done. It is basically pure, fresh, roasty coffee beans with a delicate malt backdrop that gives a mocha impression. The flavor is strangely flat, in a good way. It gives it an earthy feel. Authentic fresh coffee is everywhere, making this warming and refreshing on a winter day. The finish is bready and savor like a pastry. This is very good and makes expert use of coffee in a stout.

Originally reviewed: 2/17/12. Have had this a few times on tap, so it’s about time for a review. Most recently imbibed at City Beverage here in town. Pours a deep black with a thin mocha head on top. The nose carries a good amount of roasted aromas, coffee, charred wood. The feel of this starts out well, but lacks in endurance. Just not enough heft to hold up these flavors and alcohol. Flavors of coffee and toasted bread, chocolate, and light boozy quality. All of this weakens as I sip, and the flavors get jumbled into unintelligible mess. This beer starts out nicely, but lacks in its finish. Not a bad beer, but not one of my favorites either.

Selling Larry’s Beans in my shop I am rather partial to this beer. Definitely loaded with delicious caramel and coffee flavors. Not too smokey so the balance is quite good. On a practical note, this is not an expensive keg which is remarkable for this style of beer. Had on tap in my shop in Wake Forest, NC.

Bottle thanks to GRG1313. Pours with not quite a black body with a somewhat lasting tan head. Aromas are roasty, bready, nutty, coffee and chalky. Flavors are of fudge, smooth roast, cereal grain, nutty, grainy, coffee, molasses, raisins. Light bubbles, doesn’t feel very substantial in alcohol or body despite the ABV.

Pours almost black in color with minimal head formation. The nose definitely has quite a bit of coffee to it. There’s also a lot of roasted malt, dark chocolate, and a bit of charred character. The flavor is a bit thin and mild compared to the nose. Some good coffee notes and a decent roastiness, but that’s about it. Maybe some cocoa powder. The body is sort of disappointingly thin as well.

On tap. Pours black with a thick tan head. Aroma of stale coffee and roasted malt. Flavor is odd and sort of undescribable, plasticky, stale coffee again, and an odd sweet malt. A disappointment to say the least.

Bottle from nearbeer. Thanks! Poured an opaque black color with a light brown head. Subdued coffee and wet paper aromas reminiscent of a used coffee filter. Medium bodied and slighty sweet with mild roasty bitterness. Understated milk chocolate and coffee flavors. So so.

4 oz sample. Pours a dark brown with a little tan head. Aroma is coffee, roasted malts and caramel. Taste is coffee, molasses, caramel and roasted malts. Palate is good with heavy mouthfeel but a bit clamy. Overall a pretty decent brew
