2.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Rrauth (637) - North Carolina, USA - JAN 26, 2013
Draft. Low aroma smell. The aroma is masking any sweet hops that are normally upfront. Nice. Go ahead and try it

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 JCB (3801) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - DEC 14, 2012
12oz bottle from Sam’s, Durham. Nice dark brown pour, with an insistent, fairly vigorous carbonation. Nose is modest anise and a good deal of dry grass, with very little other dark additions coming across. Light, prickly mouthfeel and just the faintest bite on the palate. Flavors are a bit more complex than the nose would suggest, with a more pronounced hop presence and certainly more malts as well. Hoppy brown, hoppy porter, who knows with this style? This one was fairly solid.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 alexsdad06 (3042) - Ohio, USA - DEC 9, 2012
12 oz. bottle shared by jmborggren. Pours dark brown in color with a small beige head. The aroma is roasted malt, dark chocolate with hints of black coffee and a nice dose of earthy hops. The flavor is roasted malts, lighter dark chocolate, mild earthy hops with a mild to moderate bitterness to the finish. It almost seems more like a hoppy porter more than a black ipa. Not bad.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Tmoney99 (8779) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - NOV 26, 2012
Bottle shared by jmborggren. Poured clear black color with an average frothy off-white head that lasted and produced fair lacing. Moderate complex toasted earthy hop aroma. Medium body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium toasted bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. This is a good beer.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 DrSilverworm (2706) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - NOV 9, 2012

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 TURDFERGUSON (3565) - Carrboro, North Carolina, USA - NOV 2, 2012
Bottle. Mohogany pour with light carbonation and a minimal head. Nose shows some earthy and herbal hops, but mainly roasted malt, cocoa and light coffee. It does taste like the makings of a very solid porter and drinks more like a watered down porter as the hops do little to add character.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 emacgee (3433) - Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA - OCT 26, 2012
Pours a clean and opaque black with burnt copper edges and one finger of khaki tan head. Very nice nose. Lots of clean coffee and roast character coming through. Some bitter chocolate and citrusy hops. I also get the faintest hint of infection, just like this one I got in some blueberry beer I did. Nice flavor, clean coffee roast with a touch of acidity and bitter bakers chocolate. Would have been a GREAT porter if they’d kept the hops down. Medium body with an acidic palate. Big Boss’ darker beers seem to lose carbonation quickly...I’ve noticed that in the Aces and Ates well. Seems to go flat quick.
I want to ask everyone who makes a Black IPA if their IPA was just not doin’ it until they made it BLACK.....
