3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 CaptainCougar (6834) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - NOV 2, 2010
Bottle: First pour filled an entire pint glass with all foam. After settling it revealed a dark amber mahogany color with some remaining larger beige bubbles. Has a sweet toasty dark caramel and candi sugar nose with some molasses and banana notes. Starts with good fullness and sweet chocolate chip cookie dough flavor well balanced with some light clove spice and doughy yeastiness before a slightly drier, but smooth semi-sweet finish. A fairly true to style and very drinkable Belgian strong ale.

Bottle courtesy of kyzr. Pours brown with a thin white head. Smells of caramel, chocolate, some pepper. Tastes of tea, fruit, some tartness on the finish. Decent.

Bottled. Poured a clear, deeper reddish-brown with a very short-lived head. Nose was of some sweet, dark fruity malts, grains, and other spiked dark malts. Alcohol was certainly prevalent in the flavor, with muddled dark fruit, chocolate, raisins, and toffee backing it up. Grainy and flat on the palate, with a lighter body. Not too good.

Not a lot going on here. I looks like a Coca Cola with a slender white head. The aroma has dark, sweet malts and a hint of chocolate. The chocolate seems like it’s transformed into coffee in the taste, the dark malts and alcohol each playing a supporting role. Watery.

Dark brown color Small head. Aroma is molasses and brown sugar. Medium bodied. Malts are prevalent and not very sweet. Hops are slightly spicy There are a lot of brown sugar notes to this beer, yet its not very sweet. Which is kind of weird. Some yeastiness. Smooth taste. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Picked up a single 12-oz bottle from Flanagans in Appleton, Wisconsin. Pours a dark amber brown colored brew with a thin beige head that quickly dissipates to a thin ring. Aroma of roasted dark malt, some chocolate, banana esters, yeast and some coffee. Taste is medium bodied, with flavors of chocolate, coffee, a hint of yeast and some toffee. Finish is semi-sweet with a chocolate, dark pitted fruit and yeast aftertaste. Surprisingly this bottle survived some long shelf life at Flanagans and is still easy drinking.

Bottled. Deep ruddy brown with garnet at the edges. The light tan head stays for a while. The aroma has sweet walnuts and toffee. There is also a little bit of iced tea. The taste has some rich iced tea and a little bit leather. The finish is dirt with some ashtray. I enjoyed this until the finish. Obvioulsy a big beer, this hides the alcohol well.

~2 year old bottle... Poured a deep, dark, purplish, brown color with a large tan head and light lacing on the glass. Spicy banana, clove, yeasty, sweet aroma. Taste was very bland, sweet, light spices, and chocolate. Reminded me of a dubbel, though very bland in the taste and weak mouthfeel. From what I understand this beer is discontinued.

Thanks to Mike at Bon Vivant for sharing this with me! Dark reddish brown body. Medium tan head. Nose is caramel and some sweetened malt notes. Taste is cocoa and brown sugar with some malt and very light alcohol notes. Very smooth mouthfeel and finish. Pretty good beer!

This brew poured a medium head of creamy finely sized light brown mostly lasting bubbles that left a fair lacing and a nearly opaque dark brown lightly carbonated body behind. Its aroma is a very plesane malty one with lots of caramel notes to it. Very nice. The flavor is nice too with a noticable alcohol content that doe not reach out and gag you but rather compliments the flavor quite nicely. The flavor also has notes of caramel and malt in it. The alcohol leaves a tingly mnouthfeel behind that lasts a fair length of time. Over all, it is one lf the better brews I have had lately.
