COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This English-Style Brown Ale is a malty, medium bodied ale with some characteristic ale fruitiness, low levels of caramel and a distinctive nutty or woody flavor. Hop influences are low. Alcohol is about 4.3% abw. This beer is the modern descendant of the ales drunk by Mary Queen of Scots and Robin Hood.

UPDATED: JUL 4, 2005 Growler from frankenkitty: This poured fairly dark like more of the American browns seem to be doing lately. Held to the light, it displays reddish highlights. It’s very lightly carbonated and briefly held a wispy white head. The aroma is lightly roasted malt with a trace of hop bitterness. The flavor is both roasted and sweet with some dark fruitiness. The finish is almost chocolate in its sweetness. This drank almost like a porter.

On tap in a very well-priced sampler. Mild malty nose. Dark copper-opaque brown color. Thick in mouth with some cold cocoa and smokey flavor.

Had this one at the brewpub in Schaumburg, Illinois, marketted as "Brewnette Bombshell." Cloudy brown pour with a filmy head, sweet malts and fruit, plum and raisin with a lot of interesting smokiness. Very good.

I definitely have to question the designation of this beer as a "brown ale". IMO, this has nothing to do with a brown ale, nor is it brown in color. It is black with no head. Its smell is muted with a little roasted malt. It’s flavor is a bit watered down but with some obvious notes of chocolate, smoke, and a little licorice. Altogether I deem this a week stout. Also, Brunette was how it was spelled at the Schaumburg RAM. All in all, it’s a mediocre beer. Reminded me of a Guinness, an awkward Guinness. It made me really mad that when I asked the waitress to describe it she only did so by color and ballparking it between two other beers.

A seasonal in the Chicagoland area, this beer is close to porter in style. Medium brown with honey-red highlights and a fully dissipating head. Lightly hopped, bocky aroma. Malted flavor is cloying at first, but the sugars stabilize and reveal a fruity, grape persona. Not bad if you’re looking to bridge the gap between RAM’s ale and porter.
