This is the silver medal winner in the Brown Porter division of the 1996 Great American Beer Festival. The mash temperature is higher to produce body and mouth feel. The 2-row barley base, in addition to a combination of chocolate and carastan malts, gives this beer a smooth, round character with chocolate undertones. Many people who normally don’t drink dark beers will drink this beer.

On Tap: at The Ram in Meridian. This beauty is dark brown with an off-white head. It shares a wonderful, chocolaty aroma. The flavor shows a great balance with the charcoal and chocolate tastes. The feel is thin & oily like many porters. Quite a yummy little treat!

Black color with no head. Damn, this place just can not brew beer to have an aroma to save their lives! Bitter coffee taste. Very watery body.

nice dark pour with a touch of red. and a big grey head. aroma is dusty not much here, served too cold. taste is sweet chocolate with a cherry robitussin finish. a nice refreshing brew that doesn’t have much against it or much that sticks out.

Dark body with lasting one finger head. Taste-raisin, fig, some bittersweet chocolate. Porter aspects are nicely done. Slight medicine/cough syrup on the finish that detracts. Malty syrupy nose. Nose smells how I imagine raisin extract would smell.

Chocolate with very mild roastiness underneath. Deep brown to black with a decent head. Watery fore prepares you for dissapointment, but a strong roastiness and chocolate, coffee notes save it. Very tasty and true to style porter flavors here. The watery start prevents it from greatness unfortunately.

StewardofGondor (1934) - Washington Heights - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - SEP 19, 2005
Schaumburg. Deep cherry-mahogany in color with lighter tints when held to light. Creamy tan wrung for the head. Aroma comes to fruition with semi-sweet chocolate chips, dark confectionary chocolate, iced & blended cafe mocha, a touch of caramel and a hint of lactose. Medium roasted coffee and dark chocolate are the most prevalent flavors, along with a Heath bar tribute that’s been smothered in caramel. Some slight searing in the finish, going out like Tollhouse morsels. A common, typical brewpub offering, but enjoyable, nonetheless.

SuIIy (1983) - Burlington, Vermont, USA - AUG 21, 2005
Draft at brewery. Pours dark brown w/ light tan head. Nose is roasty, coffee. Taste is big roast, coffee, chocolate. Served about 15 degrees fehrenheit.

Crosling (1864) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - AUG 15, 2005
Black with ruby colored edges and a small, poorly developed head of light tan. Typical porter smell, malt accented (with very little hop aroma), with hints of chocolate fudge, roast, espresso and coffee. While the aroma can almost be considered vibrant, the flavor is very gentle. Palate is soft and fizzy, almost chaulky. Light cocoa initially, which fades into a burnt fruit aspect. I don’t usually say this about Porters, but this could use more hop. Not enjoyable, maybe even a drainpour.

Draft: Dark brown with some tan head. Nose is lots of chocolate and roasted malts. Lots of chocolate and caramel sweetness in the taste as well, with some coffee also making an appearance. Finishes with a nice dry bite. Medium bodied with a slick mouthfeel to it. Not bad at all.

Draft in Addison, TX. Pours a dark brown, but the head is too clear for my fancy. Aroma is chocolate and roasted malt. Flavor is straight coffee with a chocolate finish. Alcohol is balanced nicely. Palate is thick and coats the tongue. Solid porter.
