This is the silver medal winner in the Brown Porter division of the 1996 Great American Beer Festival. The mash temperature is higher to produce body and mouth feel. The 2-row barley base, in addition to a combination of chocolate and carastan malts, gives this beer a smooth, round character with chocolate undertones. Many people who normally don’t drink dark beers will drink this beer.

Pours a lighter brown than expected with an touch of tan head. Nose and taste is a bit more mellow than most porters. A touch of chocolate sweetness and generally very approachable and drinkable. More pleasing to the masses than to someone who really likes a great porter I suspect. As one of the masses in this case I found the beer to be very solid.

At the Ram in Wheeling. Pours a deep brown-black with a tan head. Nose is toasty, light chocolate and a roasty note. Some caramel comes through, hops are quite restrained overall. On tasting, crisp and dry, some medium caramel notes and a nice enough roast quality. Quite clean overall. Balanced bitterness and sweetness. Not too bad.

On tap at The Ram in Seattle. Pours dark with a thin tan head. Ashy, smokey smell. Bit of a chocolate taste, smoky and caramel flavors. I thought it was a pretty solid beer.

Tap. Chocolate malt and light ash aroma. Dark brown color with minimal head. Dark chocolate malt and wood/ash flavor. Body on the light side. Okay - a bit stout-like.

Pours dark brown with small white head. Aroma is caramel, coffee, and dark malts. Taste is dark caramel malts, chocolate, and coffee. The body is way too light for the style. I’d pass on this one.

On tap at the Rosemont, IL brewpub. Poured into a chilled glass again, ugh. Very deep brown colored body with an inch thick, dense and very creamy, light brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing throughout. Aroma is pretty pleasant. A milky chocolate sweetness with some caramel and a light roast. Flavor is similar. A bit thin, but tasty enough. Milky chocolates up front with a nice caramel sweetness. A more distinct coffee presents itself in the light-moderate roastiness that grows a touch towards the end along with a hint of earthy hops. Finishes with a nice chocolate sweetness that’s a bit chalky along with a light, coffee and earthy bitterness. Dry before leaving a lengthy aftertaste. Light body with a moderate, soft carbonation. Overall, not a bad porter. Pleasant milky chocolate and caramel with a solid-coffee roast. The chilled glass sucks, but this was enjoyable.
