Cask at Alibi Room, Vancouver. Pours Dark Brown, almost opaque, no head, nice smoky/roasted aroma. Slightly syrupy and sweet, medium body. Subtle finish reintroduces smoky notes. A very nice traditional English-style porter, glad to have had it on cask.

On nitro tap at The Alibi Room, pours dark orangey brown with a foamy beige head. Aroma of English malt, light treacle and biscuit. Flavour of butterscotch, roasted malt, treacle, light spices and feint chocolate. Great smooth body with rich flavours for a porter. Very enjoyable.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draught at the brewpub
Dark amber-brown color, with a persistent creamy head. Aroma of dark, roasted malts, light bread. Smooth mouthfeel in the front, with a good roasted malt and dark chocolate flavor, getting drier to the end, more ashy, more toasty; there are light hop qualities, but they are hidden by the dark malts. The dryness of the final is also a bit metallic. Quite tasty overall.

2.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Aroma is okay roasted barley with nothing else on the nose, and none of that barley is turning into other fancy flavours you might reasonably expect from roasted barley. Has modest head, and a dark amber-black body. Flavour is barley, roasted; imagine that! It’s drinkable but missing some serious mastery.

I’ve been driving past this place on a regular basis ever since they opened and at last, yesterday, finally stepped inside for lunch, Oh yes, and also for some beer. This porter looked right but I could sense any sort of aroma at all. Odd, but the taste was what it should be and that’s what matters the most. Might have been some dark chocolate, might have been some burnt coffee, but if there was I could not discern any of it. However, it DID taste like a porter. Mouthfeel was better than some porters I’ve had, i.e., not thin, and this one had a nice finish. An okay beer, and I’d have it again.

2.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Very pale for a porter... looks like a darkish amber colour. Brown nitro head. Faint caramel and toast, but otherwise quite low. Flavour is chocolatey and roasty with a touch of coffee. Light caramel/cocoa finish with lingering bitterness.
