COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This ale is an American version of the classic barley wines from England. Rich malty and toffee notes are balanced well with American Hops to hide the alcohol profile.

Bottle thanks to Sean! Pours clear amber brown with minimal head. Aroma has some grassy hops and a bit of caramel. Flavor begins with a bit of grassy hops and but a bit of dark fruits and caramel for a complex finish.

12oz Bottle. Thanks Sean! Caramel, boozy, big B-wine aroma. Flat pour. Oxidized, understandably. Somehow, it’s not a complete dust bomb. The hops have faded entirely. There are some interesting roving fruit qualities to this and some fun intensified pale malt characters, but it’s definitely seen better days, which is too bad, because a good Barleywine should show well at two years.

A: The beer pours amber in color with a small off-white head. S: Smells a bit sour. Cherries and green apple, perhaps a touch of lemon. There is a definite barleywine character to the beer, but it’s sort of hidden. A bit of booze and some sweet caramel malt notes. T: Sort of a mix of sweet and sour flavors. Sour cherries and lemon but sweet toffee and caramel. A bit of toasted bread and a definite booze note giving a bit of warmth. M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. O: The sourness just wasn’t something I was expecting to get here. Sort of ruined it for me.

Thanks to markwise for opening this well aged barleywine. Pours murky brownish copper with super tall white head. The big aroma has apricot, apples, malts, cardboard and cold deli meat. The taste is a bit bright with carbonation enhanced pine hops, spicy hops, sweet malts and some soapiness. Somewhere in there I seem to be getting pork chop too. Odd stuff.

Thanks to hoppymeal for this one in trade. Sampled at IBrew2or3’s going away. Pours caramel color with an off-white head. Gusher. Nose is a hint of caramel, cardboard, vinegar, some earth, and some hops. Flavor is similar with malty caramel trying to cut through the vinegar and cardboard. Medium-bodied and past its prime.

12oz bottle via iceicebaby on BA. thanks, sean! pours a still, hazy, reddish copper with no head at all and just a trace of carbonation. aroma is nice with muted citrus hops, toffee, rum cake, and light toast with a hint of booze. flavor is decent though with orange citrus, caramel malts, and nutty toffee backed by light grass, vanilla, and tobacco. palate is a bit thin for a barleywine and nearly flat. overall, a fairly nondescript brew.

12 oz. bottle; thanks to deyholla for the trade; clear light orange with trace white head; some stale oranges, sticky malt and white sugar; thin texture and light flavors of stale fruits, lemons, sugary malt, candy; a little stale to me overall

Nose is full of iced tea, crystal malts, light caramel, somewhat earthy. Pours golden amber, no head or lace. Iced tea, caramel, light fruity melon flavors. Fruity iced tea flavors. Lightly carbonated. We’ll its unoffensive.

Draft @ BRCH (June 09). Pours a hazy amber color with a small fine off white head. The aroma is caramel malt, moderately sweet ripe fruits, with a floral hop note. The flavor is caramel malts and ripe fruits with a hop presence that seems faded. It seemed like this was an American barleywine that had age in that I picked up some hops but they seemed to have lost their pop. The alcohol was not a factor. Medium bodied with a slightly bitter finish. Rating #5 for this beer.
