on tap in a snifter at Hop Devilís "Daze of the Devil" fest, 1/19/08
A: Pours a color midway between mahogany and burnt siena, with a moderate 1-finger dark cream-colored head.
S: Woah, did I singe my nostrils? I wasnít expecting that, like putting my face in a vat of Makerís Mark. Vanilla cuts a wide swath through the oaky bourbon character, is joined by a slight not of dark chocolate, but even combined are not enough to mask the obvious alcohol presence.
T/M: Huge whiskey nose, just like the aroma warned. And unlike other big BA stouts, doesnít go away. Ever. In fact, itís a bit much (and I love this style, see: Goose Island Bourbon County Stout for an example of brewing perfection). The oakiness imparts some dryness to the finish, and vanilla is surely present, but I found the constant, ever-present bourbon led to an almost sour cherry flavoring that wasnít entirely enjoyable. Syrupy, as might be expected.
D: Due to the overbearing bourbon character, I wouldnít consider this terribly drinkable. I would try again, as I do love the style, but its surely been done better before.

12oz that was a bonus from mbirder. 2005 Vintage from the barrel and bottled by the brewer. Shared with m gf Cyn. Pours black iwth a nice paisley light brown head. Nose has an abundance of bourbon. Taste is sweet and very very viscous with lots of coffee and bourbon. Too bourbony for me.

Capped nip with a flying buffalo label and the a neck band that says bourbon barrel aged...based on previous ratings Iím going to guess this is the correct beer. Thanks Alex. Boozey tobacco, chared malt, some apple, vanilla...hot smelling and dirty danky. Prune cola, light body, lively carb, leather, tobacco, vanilla, hot wet bourbon...it burns.

Handbottled. A dark red-brown beer with a thin brown head. The aroma has notes of alcohol, roasted malt, and fruits. The flavor is sweet with notes of alcohol, wood, roasted malt, and caramel, leading to a dry alcoholic finish.

Thanks to mibirder for this bottle - thick, viscous black beer - smells strongly of bourbon and thick chocolate and roasted malt - low carbonation - thick, slick yet sticky mouthfeel - strongly boozy, with loads of oak and some chocolate character - some red wine-ish tannins add some complexity, but there is way too much bourbon and alcohol - too much time in the barrel, I think.

Bottle at Craigís bit tasting, Edinburgh, 21-03-09 many thanks Craig. Also a big thanks to Miketd for passing on this little gem, cheers mate. The nose on this was massive and totally bourbon, so strong was it that it did sort of take me back to one or two bad moments drinking whisky in my late teens and so that was a rather unpleasant memory but for those who like bourbon this is the one for you. Poured very black, I donít think I noted a head before I started sipping. Bourbon, roasty malts and some bitter chocolate in the mouth, it takes no prisoners this one and if you like a beer thats more Joe Bugner than Sugar Ray Leonard then this is the bruiser for you. I thought it was fine but found it hard to get past the impact the nose had, but many thanks to Mike for this rareity. A5 A4 F6 P3 OV13 3.1

Bottle at home ... with Fin and thanks to Fin ... with additional thanks to Miketd for this rarity ... Deep black ... Oh my THe Bourbon is way tooo much up front in nose ... ive not tasted yet... but the bourbon has me scared ...flour as expected has the bourbon clearly to the front ... bit to rought in its alcohol ... the nice stout and roast malt charcater are there but are being trampled upon by the Bourbon.. I think this is a beer that might well be much better on the Bourbon barrels 2nd use. Bottled 5-6-08 after 2 years in Bourbon barrel acording to label.

Super dark and murky with barely even a hint of head. Chocolate dissolved in alcohol with some dark over ripe fruit qualities in the nose. Semi still with chocolate, vanilla and some roast in the flavour. Has a slight oxidized feel to it. Doesnít seem to hide the booze well, but it doesnít ever become overbearing, just want to let you knwo that itís a big beer.

Tap at Hop Devil: Pours opaque black with a deep brown ring for head. Huge boozy aroma. Almost all vanilla. Thick sticky body, which slightly cloying. Flavor is high octane. Vanilla extract and enormous rum character, not bourbon. Too hot, and no roast to it. Lacks balance.
