COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The English brewed this style of stout for the Russian Czars. One thing was certain. This beer wasn’t going to freeze at twelve percent alcohol during the cold Russian winters. This stout is brewed with twice the amount of malt & hops of most beers. The flavor is very roasted, coffee, sweet and a hint of coconut. It goes down warn due to the higher alcohol volume. We serve our Russian Stout in a brandy snifter to let it slowly warm up to release it’s entire flavor. A great beer with cigars.

GABF 2010. Pours clear black with a small, creamy tan head, low retention with flat lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, toffee, nutty), light hops (woody), average esters (dried fruit) with notes of dates. Flavor is heavy malt (caramel, chocolate, toffee, nutty), light hops (woody), average esters (dried fruit) with notes of dates. Full body, medium warmth, carbonation, and creaminess with a sweet texture and dry finish.

12 ounce. Big black beer with very thin head. Little carbonation. Flavor is bourbon, coconut. Tasty, but body slightly thin. Lacks fullness of a big imperial stout. Bourbon drives most of the flavor.

Pours dark brown/black with a thin tan head...lively with decent lacing. Aroma is very roasty...somewhat burnt..with a hint of sweet coffee and a mild note of dark fruit. Flavor has coffee, caramel, a bit of chocolate...very roasty...burnt toffee or molasses. Mouthfeel is thick and sticky and the finish is warming and lingers with a roasty sweetness.

12oz Bottle. Thanks Sean! First snow here in Rhode Island, so I’m ready for something thick, oily and viscous. I didn’t know what to expect, even though I’ve had the super-oaky barrel-aged versions. This was intensely delicious! A balanced, rich array of complex toasty, roasted, charred, and brown flavors. Lots of near-vinous fruit-like characters combined with a fantastic, silk and velvet tongue. Extremely sippable. A great, balanced and intensely flavorful stout!

12oz bottle thanks to northernbrews, pours black with a huge tan head that lingered forever, nice lacing, aroma is of molasses, caramel, chocolate and booze, the flavor is WAY too sweet for me, huge sweetness on the front end with molasses with a finish of booze, kind of reminded me of drinking port, which I enjoy just not in beer. Not my cup of tea here.

Aroma: lots of mollasses, cherries, brown sugar. Appearance: Black pour with no head. Flavors: Mollasses, sweet caramel. The alcohol is very present too. Palate: Very heavy with no carbonation. Overall: Not very good. The aroma looked promising but the carbonation killed this one. Drinking it after the BB Dark apparition didn’t help either I guess ;)

12oz bottle. Poured deep brown with a lovely rich tan head. The aroma picked up warm, raw cane sugar, molasses, and mocha with more sugars and alcohol warmth around the nose.. vanilla and toasted coconut rounded it out.. this was very much on the sweet side, but it was very welcome for dessert. The flavor found warm dark chocolate, molasses, and coffee at the core.. huge coconut showed up about a third of the way through, and carried into the aftertaste.. peppery, raw alcohol and coconut over a lot of residual sugars in the end. Heavier-bodied with a bit of a syrupy feel on the palate.. hotter as it progressed.. the oats did give some smoothness on the middle.. overall a tad rough, but it had some very good characteristics in there too.

1/15/11. Shared at the Sea Bass going away tasting! Slightly sour and roasty coffee and chocolate. Not bad.

Tasted at the big “SeaBass has got to go” tasting. Pours deep dark with loose mocha head. The aroma is black licorice, some black strap molasses and some fudge brownie. The taste has an initial pulse of tartness or lactose or something a bit out of place and then it moves into spicy black licorice, molasses, dark roasted malts and a bit of dark chocolate.

Bottle @ Seabass going away party, Jan15th ’11. Brune foncée, mousse épaisse beige. Malt et grillé, fine note de café avec une certaine aigreur de fruits noirs au fini. Un peu déçu par cette bière qui me parait avoir des notes d’infection.

On draught at Big Rock Chophouse, 5/9/10

Black, thin head, minimal lacing, intensely sweet licorice, coffee and chocolate aroma. Medium mouthfeel, crisp finish, very sweet, noticeable alcohol burn but not unexpected for the abv. Very good imperial stout.
