Commercial Description:
NOTE: Released at the Summer 2008 Michigan Brewers Guild fest as "Cherry Popping Danny’s Sour Fruit Beer"

This is our Tripel recipe re-fermented with tart cherries from Michigan then aged in an oak barrel with a wild yeast strain for a complex flavor that complements the cherries. 8.5% ABV

Aroma is acedic, sweet cherry, with some malt backbone. Taste is sweet cherry, some pine, more cherry. Decent.

From a 12oz Bottle. Courtesy of CharlesDarwin. Mostly transparent, pale pink color with a thin ring of wispy white head. Mildly acetic nose with hints of cherry sweetness and a drier, skin tannin character. Some sweeter apricot and apple fruit notes also come through. Some acetone character noted, but not dominant. Light bodied, softly carbonated mouthfeel with a moderate acidity. Flavors of tart cherries up front on the palate, along with some chewy skin tannins. The cherry flavors are could be a bit stronger, but their restrained presence allows the raw sour characters to show through nicely. The flavors seem much less acetic than the nose suggests, with only a mild acetone presence working its way into the finish. Certainly more tart than vinegary. Finishes a bit thin, with some husky, cereal grain flavors lingering in the final smack. Overall, a very respectable sour cherry beer. I especially like the initial flavor, but could do with a bit less huskiness in the finish. Thanks for the rare treat, Tom!

2008 MiBGF (Cherry Popping Danny’s): Coppery hue with reddish tones and a minimal lace. The aroma has notes of tart cherries, lacto funk, vinegar, oak, and dusty yeast vapours. The taste starts with a nice sour bite and fruity tone followed by some barnyard tones. Biscuity and wheat notes all about the palate. Oaky and nutty towards the finish. The mouth feel is sprite and very refreshing. Very very nice brew, my 3rd best of day 1.

On tap at MBG summer fest 08’. Poured a dark pink color. Aroma is nice tart cherries, tart and funky. Flavor is more funk, vanilla, tart cherries, nice wood with a great finish that lasted and made you want to drink more. This was another huge surprise from Big Rock, who seems to be putting together a great sour program. This was one of my top few at the fest.

On tap at MIBGSF 08. Pours a rose like color with a small white head. Aroma is funk, tart cherries, oak. Flavor is again funk, tart cherries, oak, hints of vanilla, green apple. Palate is medium to light, medium carbonation, finished refreshingly tart and acidic. This was fantastic and probably my biggest surprise of the fest!!

12oz Bottle. Nice krieked sour ale aroma, rich brett cherry pie, and creamy wildness. Great funk and cherry. Great! Pours a clearish rose colored, with water-colored fringe. Not much head. Flavor is nuts. I’ve never seen cherry this complex. An amazing run of cherry juice, deep pie crust, and an intense rich almond I would never have imagined that I would seen in the beer. Subdued sweetness and light funk. Finishes on this incredible, distinct white chocolate flavor. A touch of oak. Amazing mix of fruit, malt, barrel and alcohol. Intense! Brett funk melds so well. Carbonation works well. Vanilla makes an incredible fruit flavor. Tremendous balance, great barrel, great fruit, awesome flavor and the right level of funk. Soft and not harsh, which makes it amazing. Woo hoo! Thanks Sean!
