CharlesDarwin (1312), State College, Pennsylvania, USA May 9, 2008 Updated: Jun 10, 2008 Original rate. 12oz unlabeled bottle, supposedly bottled from the GABF Brewmaster’s Dinner. Ragingly sour nose. Wheat grains and sour. A touch of acetobacter, some clay and wheat. Light fruit. Pours a clouded amber, with a rim of whitish. Flavor develops acetone and acetic acid. This is pretty sour. A dash of pepper and light sugars. It’s actually not that deep beyond some acetone and light vinegar. No funk, cheese or goat. Clean, but the wrong kind. There’s some evaporative pepper, but nothing I really want to sink into. Too much like Rodenbach Grand Cru. Puckering and hot. Not sure this is all that amazing. 737416=3.7
Re-rate. 12oz Bottle with neck label from brewer. Back to that densely acetic nose. It’s softer and more fragrant in this rendition, but immediately reminiscent of Rodenbach Grand Cru. There are some dark cherry notes and a run of pizza herbs, rosemary and sage. I appreciate the wildness, but again acetic. Pours a hazy translucent orange-red, with a good soapy rim of off-white on the edges. Flavor is tart and full of nail polish. Ugh. Burning. This beer is just a mess of acetone, white vinegar and dying grain sugar. Flavors are muddled and the body comes as thin. A bit of caramel adds to the confusion. I really wanted to like this beer, I really did. But this is just not all that palatable. Soft. Ahh. Acetone. A bit of dusty brett fruit climbs through the acid, but it’s just too late. 746212=3.1
Ughsmash (2773), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA May 1, 2008 Bottle at the pre-DLD hotel tasting, thanks to artusory! Poured just lightly hazy medium golden with a short cap of white head. The aroma showcased sour fruit skins and vinegar backed by pale malt and toffee sweetness.. dry peppery yeast accents.. quite vibrant. The flavor had sweet, sticky fruit surrounded by sour vinegar and dry cherry dust.. sour finish with even more vinegar.. complex and very enjoyable. Sour, dry, and well-balanced on the palate. I’d love to try this again sometime. kmweaver (1765), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA Apr 28, 2008 12oz bottle, courtesy of artusory. Thanks, Ryan! Pours a slightly hazy, ruby-cherry color; slightly off-white head with patchy lacing. Loads of tart cherries, red fruits (cherries, strawberries), bright citrus and fruit juice in the aroma; very pleasant nose. Average carbonation. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: cherry / strawberry juice, tart and plenty of funkiness, citrus, and a solid touch of acidity; very pleasant sour beer. Medium finish: lasting sourness and acidity, red fruits and light citrus. xmarcnolanx (574), Kirkwood, Missouri, USA Apr 26, 2008 Aroma is slightly apple, red bright fruit, sourness,.
Taste is vinegary, sour acidic- very nice.
Finish, is a bit of cereal, smooth vinegar, sweetness.
