Rastacouere (5421), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Jul 28, 2005 Pitch black, dark brown head. Very bold nose with an intense anise note. High level of roastiness from the heavy use of dark malts. Gentle dark fruitiness contributes the lightest vinous aspects to an otherwise extremely dry aroma full of dark chocolate. Once again, the flavor is very bold, full on licorice, but nevertheless very hoppy with this firm citric bite that comes floral, lemony almost. A bit worty middle edges give it a bready nature, but this works with me. Whiskeyish alcohol lingers on the palate. Medium-full bodied, fitting light-to-medium carbonation. Good impy. hopdog (4950), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 16, 2008 Big thanks to miketd for trading away this one! Hand bottled from brewer, vintage 2005 and bottled in 2007. Poured a dark black color with just a trace of a brown head. Aromas of cocoa, vanilla, roast, some dark fruits, and some wood and smoke. Tastes of dark cherries, chocolate, roasty, woody, and caramel. Alcohol content hidden. hopscotch (4756), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Oct 4, 2006 Draft...GABF ’06. They were calling it "Got Rocks? Russian Imperial Stout"... This beer rocks!... Pitch black ale. Small, creamy, light brown head with an orange tint. Chocolate, vanilla aroma. Well-balanced flavor is sweet up front with plenty of burnt, bitter notes on the backside. Full-bodied and oily with medium carbonation. Burnt, bitter finish. World class stout! muzzlehatch (4429), Burlington, Vermont, USA Jul 30, 2005 Sampled draught at the Michigan Brewers Fest. Black and thick with a touch of very dark head that lasts...tarry, burnt caramel and a bit of chocolate in the forceful nose...very thick, sweet with an acerbic coffee bit coming in towards the finish, a bit syrupy...milk chocolate finishes off the the thick, somewhat cloying but enjoyable body. Liked this less than most of you so far, but it stands out in memory and I’d love to have a bigger sample. tiggmtl (4200), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Sep 2, 2005 Orange blossoms floating in a big sweet chocolaty aroma. Opaque brown body with creamy, fine-bubbled, dense, brown head that recedes to partial cover. Chocolate and liquorice are strong in the flavour with floral orange hop character and light roasty bitterness. Medium body with lively carbonation that is perhaps surprisingly strong for the style. Simple, heavy, straightforward and enjoyable. Sampled at the Michigan Brewers Guild Summer Beer Festival 2005.
